New York Times writer Derek Guy, also known as “the menswear guy,” admitted to being brought across the border illegally as a child and picked a fight with Vice President JD Vance Monday.

Guy explained how his family escaped from Vietnam to Canada and eventually to the United States in a post on X. His father worked as a janitor in Canada, but then went to the U.S. to work with his sister when that job fell through.

“He ended up staying in the US longer than he was supposed to — not knowing immigration laws — and asked my mom to come be with him,” Guy said. “Of course, she went and carried me over the border while I was still a baby.”

I debated whether to share my story on here, but I guess I will.

I think there’s an idea out there that millions of violent criminals are pouring across the border, carrying machetes and drugs, looking to harm Americans. Certainly, while some people fall into that category, the…

After admitting his family’s status, Guy said, “I’m still unsure whether we technically broke an immigration law….But either way, since I came here without legal documentation, I eventually fell into the category of being an undocumented immigrant.”

Guy explained how his illegal immigration has made his interactions with the law scarier, has shaped the opportunities available to him and has “taken an emotional toll, as this legal issue hangs over your head like a black cloud.”

The menswear guy excused his family and those similar to his, candidly saying, “Parents may have crossed the border not knowing about the law, as the law can be pretty confusing and lawyers are expensive. Perhaps, in the end, they should have hired a lawyer; but sometimes life is messy.”

Guy condemned the ICE deportations, calling them “inhumane” while supporting and admiring the protestors “who are putting their bodies on the line for non-violent resistance.”(RELATED: Legacy Media Deems LA ICE Riots Merely ‘Protests’ As Rioters Take Torch To City)

Guy finished his story with a call to action, urging his readers to get involved in long-term change to help illegal immigrants and hoping that his story dissuades the idea that “all undocumented migrants are MS-13 members.”

One X user said, “the menswear guy just openly admitted on here that he’s here illegally,” to which another user responded, “JD Vance I know you’re reading this and you have the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever.”

The vice president responded with a GIF, hinting at the possibility of deporting Guy.

The menswear guy did not find it amusing and responded to Vance with photos of him in ill-fitting clothes, saying “i think i can outrun you in these clothes.”
