Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated Monday that she did not believe the National Guard was necessary to respond to unrest in the city, even as video footage of active fires and street violence aired during her appearance on CNN.

Speaking with CNN hosts Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown, Bass said, “I don’t think the National Guard is needed now. Things in L.A. are calm.”

Her remarks came just hours after President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles in response to escalating violence connected to protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The protests began following an ICE raid at a Home Depot store in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The operation was part of a broader effort by federal immigration authorities to arrest individuals with outstanding warrants and criminal records.

In response to the unrest, Trump authorized the deployment of approximately 2,000 National Guard troops to assist local law enforcement.

The decision followed multiple incidents of vandalism, assaults, and property damage across several areas of the city.

Bass continued, “I will tell you that I’m saddened by the extent of the vandalism in the form of graffiti all through the downtown area, but it is important for people to know that even in downtown, this is related to a few streets. This is not citywide civil unrest taking place in Los Angeles.”

Notice how she is saying, ‘Everything is fine,’ the footage CNN is showing is of chaos with things quite literally set on fire.

However, video clips shown during the live broadcast included images of fires burning in the streets and individuals clashing with police.

Footage also circulated widely on social media, showing violent acts against federal agents.

According to the FBI, a $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of that individual.

Fox News national correspondent Bill Melugin released video and still images of the incident.

Further incidents of violence were documented throughout the weekend, prompting law enforcement officials to raise concerns about public safety.

At a press conference on Sunday, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McConnell provided details about the types of weapons used against officers.

“Tonight we had individuals out there shooting commercial-grade fireworks at our officers that can kill you,” McConnell said, as reported by ABC7.

The deployment of the National Guard is intended to provide additional security support for ICE operations and help local law enforcement respond to public safety threats.

President Trump has defended the decision as necessary to protect federal personnel and restore order.

The Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice have both stated that federal agents will continue their operations in Los Angeles and other targeted cities in compliance with national immigration enforcement policy.

Authorities are also investigating reports of organized violence and coordination among individuals targeting law enforcement.

The situation remains fluid as National Guard units coordinate with the LAPD and federal agencies. Oral updates from federal and city officials are expected later this week.
