Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) issued sharp criticism this week of California Governor Gavin Newsom, Representative Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), and media outlets covering the unrest in cities across the country.

Speaking in a televised interview, Kennedy commented on the widespread violence and property destruction that has erupted in several Democrat-run cities, including those in California, amid ongoing protests.

Kennedy began by addressing the mental fitness of Rep. Waters.

“I mean no disrespect to Congresswoman Waters, but somebody needs to tell her that the voices in her head are not real,” Kennedy said.

He then turned his attention to media coverage of the ongoing riots. Kennedy criticized the repeated use of the phrase “mostly peaceful” to describe incidents that have included arson, looting, and attacks on law enforcement.

“I’ve listened to so many of my colleagues and members of the media say that these are mostly peaceful protests,” Kennedy said.

“That’s like saying that Harvey Weinstein is mostly a feminist because he didn’t rape every woman who came into his office. He only raped some of them.”

Kennedy also criticized Governor Gavin Newsom’s handling of public safety and law enforcement policy in California. He argued that Newsom’s actions show disregard for the concerns of ordinary Americans.

“In terms of Governor Newsom, he’s flip-flopped a lot… but the governor’s been very consistent on one thing: his antipathy toward the lives and feelings of ordinary Americans, including public safety,” Kennedy said.

He continued with further criticism, saying, “Governor Newsom is — the record shows this — he’s the dictionary definition of weenie. He thinks cops are a bigger problem than criminals. He thinks if a cop has to shoot a criminal, it’s automatically and always the cop’s fault. But if a criminal shoots a cop, it’s automatically and always the gun’s fault.”

Kennedy emphasized what he described as a simple but ignored reality. “Cops will leave you alone unless you do illegal stuff,” he said.

“That’s what we’re seeing in California.”

His remarks come as violent protests and demonstrations have erupted across several major cities, with Los Angeles among those experiencing property damage, attacks on law enforcement officers, and clashes between protesters and authorities.

Kennedy’s comments reflect increasing frustration among Republicans with the ongoing unrest and with what they see as permissive attitudes from Democrat-led city governments and inconsistent coverage from mainstream news outlets.

Recent data from law enforcement agencies in California indicates a sharp rise in violent incidents connected to the protests.

National Guard and Marine units have been deployed in areas of Los Angeles to support local and federal law enforcement efforts.

Governor Newsom, Rep. Waters, and other California Democrats have pushed back against claims that their policies are contributing to the disorder, asserting that peaceful protests are being misrepresented by selective reporting.

However, critics continue to point to video footage and arrest data that suggest a significant portion of recent protests have included criminal activity and targeted violence.

Sen. Kennedy’s remarks have drawn attention for their blunt tone and unsparing criticism, highlighting a broader divide between federal and state leadership on how to address ongoing civil unrest.
