Women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines revealed her pregnancy over the weekend during a Turning Point USA event, making the announcement in the context of her ongoing public disagreement with Olympic gymnast Simone Biles regarding transgender participation in women’s athletics.

Gaines, who has been vocal in opposing the inclusion of biological males in women’s sports, made the announcement by showing ultrasound photos and revealing her baby bump on stage.

Her announcement referenced a recent remark from Biles, who had taken aim at Gaines on social media.

Trump’s Sovereign Wealth Fund: What Could It Mean For Your Money?

“I think the funniest thing about this to me about her saying, ‘Bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a man.’ How many men do you know that have this?” Gaines said as she addressed the crowd, holding up her ultrasound images.

The exchange followed a series of posts from Biles on X, where she criticized Gaines for her activism.

“No one in sports is safe with you around,” Biles had written in one post.

@Riley_Gaines_ You’re truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser. You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender… https://t.co/pjpzuZ0AlO

In another, she told Gaines to “bully someone your own size,” implying that would be a male.

Early Sunday, Gaines followed up with a post on X: “Surprise! Baby GIRL coming in September. God is so good all the time. There’s something so special and providential about having a little girl. She’s everything I’ve been fighting for & the little girl we’ve prayed over for years praise God!”

Gaines has been a prominent figure in the debate over fairness in women’s sports since tying for fifth place with Lia Thomas, a transgender swimmer, in the 200-meter freestyle at the 2022 NCAA championships.

She has since campaigned nationally for policies that limit women’s competition to biological females.

The pregnancy announcement also highlighted Gaines’s broader pro-life position.

During her remarks, she said the experience of pregnancy has reinforced her beliefs.

“I feel this baby, this young girl kicking around in my stomach when I’m lying down to sleep at night. I see the baby’s tiny little hands, her tiny little feet on the ultrasounds. I listen to her heartbeat,” Gaines said.

Biles, who had publicly criticized Gaines, issued an apology last week after her comments generated backlash.

“The current system doesn’t adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges, and it didn’t help for me to get personal with Riley, which I apologize for,” she wrote.

Biles said her concerns stemmed from a belief that “competitive equity and inclusivity are both essential in sport.”

I wanted to follow up from my last tweets. I’ve always believed competitive equity & inclusivity are both essential in sport. The current system doesn’t adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges, and it didn’t help for me…

Gaines responded online, accepting the apology, while reaffirming her position that protecting fairness in women’s sports remains her priority.

I accept Simone’s apology for the personal attacks including the ones where she body-shamed me. I know she knows what this feels like. She’s still the greatest female gymnast of all time.

A couple of things. Sports ARE inclusive by nature. Anyone can and everyone SHOULD play… https://t.co/V8YbMvs3xf

Biles has not posted publicly since issuing the apology.

The disagreement between the two high-profile athletes highlights the ongoing national debate surrounding the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports, particularly in light of pending state-level legislation and federal guidance related to Title IX.

Gaines continues to advocate for women’s athletic spaces and maintains that her efforts are focused on ensuring competitive fairness and protecting biological distinctions in sport.

She has spoken at multiple public forums, including college campuses and political events, in support of laws restricting transgender athletes from competing in female categories.

Her announcement of a baby girl comes amid that advocacy, with Gaines making clear that her motivation is deeply personal.

“She’s everything I’ve been fighting for,” Gaines said.
