A tense exchange broke out Monday on ABC’s “The View” after co-host Sunny Hostin forcefully claimed it is “not illegal to be undocumented” during a panel discussion about President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles to quell recent rioting, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

The segment began with co-host Sara Haines criticizing President Trump’s response to the unrest, suggesting he was amplifying the chaos to benefit politically.

“There’s one catch here,” Haines said, “Current support right now, though, is that 66 percent of the American public actually thinks it’s crime enough to be undocumented and therefore deported.”

Hostin jumped in to question Haines’s characterization: “That it’s criminal to be undocumented?”

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin clarified, saying, “Even if it’s a civil offense.”

Haines continued her point by stating, “A massive amount of this country actually agrees with, not how he’s doing it, but with what he’s doing.”

She added that Trump was “leaning into a scene right now” to garner political support, claiming his approval ratings are “dropping like rocks.”

Hostin’s demeanor grew visibly agitated at that point. Interrupting the conversation, she said, “Let’s fix that right now, because it is not illegal to be undocumented.”

Speaking directly into the camera, she emphasized, “It is not a crime to be undocumented. People are not illegal. We need to put that information out there.”

Hostin reiterated that being undocumented in the U.S. constitutes a civil infraction, not a criminal act. “It is a civil infraction, not criminal,” she said.

During Hostin’s remarks, both Haines and Griffin appeared restless, with some crosstalk suggesting they may have been trying to interrupt or shift the conversation. Griffin eventually redirected the discussion, appearing to attempt to clarify the broader context of public opinion.

“I don’t think it’s actually broadly a misunderstanding,” Griffin said. “I think that 60 percent of Americans believe that it’s a civil offense and that if you come here and you are undocumented, that you should be deported.”

The heated moment highlighted ongoing tensions on the show when discussing immigration enforcement and public perception.

The discussion came amid continuing debate about the federal government’s efforts to control violent protests and enforce immigration law, especially in cities like Los Angeles.
