The two most powerful Democrats in Congress — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries — tweeted Wednesday they are setting up meetings with Zohran Mamdani, the socialist New York City mayoral candidate who won the Democratic primary Tuesday.
“Congratulations to Zohran Mamdani on a decisive primary victory. Assemblyman Mamdani ran a strong campaign that relentlessly focused on the economy and bringing down the high cost of living in New York City. We spoke this morning and plan to meet in Central Brooklyn shortly,” Jeffries tweeted Wednesday

Schumer also touted his previous collaboration with Mamdani. The pair released a two-minute video in 2021 to show support for New York City’s taxi drivers, and they also teamed up to protest a proposed power plant in Queens earlier that year. “I have known [Zohran K. Mamdani] since we worked together to provide debt relief for thousands of beleaguered taxi drivers & fought to stop a fracked gas plant in Astoria. He ran an impressive campaign that connected with New Yorkers about affordability, fairness, & opportunity,” Schumer tweeted Wednesday.

Mamdani defeated former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary Tuesday night, earning over 43 percent of the first choice selections in the city’s ranked choice election. Cuomo earned just 36 percent.

He has also previously advocated for defunding the police and for the boycott, divest and sanction (BDS) movement, according to X posts from 2020.
