A California man with a long criminal history was arrested Tuesday for allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at a Los Angeles hotel housing more than two dozen federal law enforcement officers. The attack occurred amid ongoing anti-ICE riots that have gripped the city, as reported by The New York Post.

Eric Anthony Rodriguez, 39, was taken into custody by authorities following a joint investigation led by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Major Crimes unit and the Los Angeles Fire Department’s arson team.

Rodriguez is accused of targeting a hotel near Los Angeles International Airport, where 15 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and 12 Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents were staying.

According to LAPD spokesman Officer David Cuellar, the incident took place early Saturday morning. Witnesses reported that a man had lit and hurled an incendiary device at the hotel.

The Molotov cocktail landed in a bush and ignited a small fire, which was quickly extinguished by a hotel employee. No injuries were reported.

“This coward threw a Molotov cocktail at a hotel in Los Angeles where 27 DHS law enforcement officers were staying,” said Assistant Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin in a statement.

Rodriguez was arrested Tuesday morning near the scene of the original attack. He is facing charges from the Los Angeles County District Attorney, including one count of possession of a destructive device and one count of arson.

“Anyone who threatens the lives of federal officers will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law — and that is exactly what will happen to Rodriguez,” said McLaughlin.

“If you threaten or attempt to harm a law enforcement officer, we will find you.”

Rodriguez’s criminal record spans more than 20 years. Law enforcement sources confirmed he was convicted in 2004 of receiving stolen property and has since been convicted of five additional felonies between 2004 and 2024.

His most recent conviction was in March 2024 for second-degree robbery. He was also convicted of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury. At the time of his arrest, Rodriguez had an active felony warrant for violating parole.

McLaughlin connected the incident to broader political issues in the state.

“Anthony Rodriguez is a serial criminal who will face justice for threatening the lives of federal law enforcement. Dangerous rhetoric by sanctuary politicians has fanned the flames of violence against federal law enforcement — and it has led to a 500% increase in assaults against ICE.”

Rodriguez is not the only individual recently arrested for attacks involving Molotov cocktails during the violent demonstrations in Los Angeles.

On June 7, Emiliano Garduno-Galvez was arrested and charged with attempted murder for allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies.

Garduno-Galvez, a previously deported illegal immigrant, had been arrested twice in 2024 but was released both times under California’s sanctuary state laws, which local officials used to disregard ICE detention orders.

“These are the types of criminal illegal aliens that rioters are fighting to protect,” McLaughlin said. “The Los Angeles rioters will not stop us or slow us down.”
