Vice President J.D. Vance publicly praised the newly signed peace treaty between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Republic of Rwanda, calling it “truly historic” and highlighting the significance of the decades-long conflict’s resolution.

The agreement was signed Friday with the oversight of Secretary of State Marco Rubio and marks one of the most consequential diplomatic achievements of President Donald Trump’s second term.

Vance made his comments in a series of posts on Bluesky, where he referenced the scale of the violence that has unfolded in the Great Lakes region of Africa.

“The peace treaty signing yesterday between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Rwanda was truly historic,” Vance wrote.

“That war has killed more than any since World War 2, almost all of them black.”

The war in the eastern DRC, involving multiple militias and backed by various state and non-state actors, has been ongoing for decades and is widely considered the deadliest conflict since the Second World War.

The treaty, signed by the foreign ministers of both nations, aims to bring stability to a region long plagued by violence, mass displacement, and humanitarian crises.

Vice President Vance continued his remarks by calling attention to the political silence from left-wing groups.

“I’m sure the leaders and supporters of the black lives matter movement will join me in celebrating President Trump today, who has done more to save black lives than any leader in our country,” he added.

The formal signing of the agreement was held in Washington, D.C., with Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe and his Congolese counterpart signing the document under the witness of Secretary Rubio.

President Trump also spoke on the occasion, describing the moment as a diplomatic breakthrough.

“We’re here today to celebrate a glorious triumph, and that’s what it is for the cause of peace, and this is a long time waiting: The signing of a historic peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda,” Trump said.

He added, “The conflict in the Great Lakes region of Africa displaced countless people and claimed the lives of thousands and thousands. But today, the violence and destruction comes to an end, and the entire region begins a new chapter of hope and opportunity, harmony, prosperity, and peace.”

The announcement of the treaty had been previewed days earlier on Truth Social, where President Trump credited himself and Secretary Rubio for their direct involvement in facilitating the deal.

“We’ve secured a wonderful Treaty between Congo and Rwanda,” Trump wrote earlier in the week.

“It’s a great moment for peace.”

The treaty is expected to establish new security and trade protocols between the DRC and Rwanda, as well as joint monitoring mechanisms to prevent future conflict escalation.

Specific details on enforcement and follow-up procedures are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

The peace accord brings an end to a conflict that has involved multiple armed groups and caused instability throughout the broader region.

The international community, including regional African Union partners and U.S. diplomatic teams, had long sought a comprehensive solution to the violence in eastern Congo.

The treaty signing marks a significant foreign policy accomplishment for the Trump administration and reflects ongoing U.S. efforts to stabilize key conflict zones abroad through direct engagement and diplomatic pressure.
