The New York City Board of Elections released the full results of the Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday, confirming a decisive victory for State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani over former Governor Andrew Cuomo, as reported by The New York Post.

Mamdani, 33, defeated Cuomo by approximately 117,000 votes after three rounds of ranked-choice voting were tabulated. In the final round, Mamdani held a 12-point lead, securing 56% of the vote compared to Cuomo’s 44%.

The Queens lawmaker, who ran on a Democratic Socialist platform, led the first round by more than 70,000 votes and widened the gap in subsequent rounds.

His win marks a major shift in the city’s Democratic politics, as he overcame the name recognition and fundraising strength of Cuomo, a longtime political figure in New York State.

Turnout for the 2025 primary surpassed the last mayoral primary, with over 1 million votes cast compared to 942,000 in 2021.

Mamdani’s platform includes proposals such as city-run grocery stores and an expansion of government services. Since securing the nomination, Mamdani has made several public appearances and issued statements highlighting what he views as a grassroots movement.

“It is harder than ever to believe in our democracy. It has been attacked by billionaires and hollowed out by its failure to respond to working people’s struggles,” Mamdani said in a post on X over the weekend.

Cuomo, who served as governor from 2011 to 2021 before resigning amid scandal, entered the race on the Democratic line but failed to regain traction among the city’s progressive electorate.

The general election field is expected to be crowded. Mamdani will face Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, attorney Jim Walden, and Cuomo — all of whom are continuing their campaigns under third-party ballot lines.

Cuomo has not indicated whether he intends to withdraw from the race or continue campaigning in the general election. His campaign has not released a formal statement since the primary loss.

Ranked-choice voting was implemented in New York City’s local primaries starting in 2021. Under the system, voters rank candidates in order of preference, and votes are redistributed in multiple rounds until a candidate receives a majority.

Mamdani, who currently represents the 36th Assembly District in Queens, was first elected to state office in 2020. His mayoral victory now positions him as a leading figure within the Democratic Party’s far-left flank in New York.

The general election is scheduled for November.
