A power outage at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, left riders suspended upside down for nearly 10 minutes on Saturday during the grand opening of a new roller coaster, “Siren’s Curse.”

As The New York Post reported, the incident occurred on the ride’s first day of operation and was caused by a vehicle accident that knocked out a utility pole nearby.

“Siren’s Curse,” which the park describes as the tallest, longest, and fastest tilt coaster in North America, had just opened to the public. The ride features a 160-foot lift hill, nearly 3,000 feet of track, and reaches speeds of up to 58 miles per hour during its two-minute cycle.

According to Cedar Point spokesman Tony Clark, the ride came to a halt after the park experienced a power failure. “The coaster’s safety system performed as designed, the ride was restarted, and guests continued their ride,” Clark told the Akron Beacon Journal.

“Siren’s Curse reopened shortly after and all guests exited the ride safely.”

The roller coaster stopped mid-ride around 8 p.m., with riders stuck in an inverted position. After approximately 10 minutes, the ride resumed without requiring any evacuations.

However, Cedar Point temporarily shut down the attraction, which remained closed until approximately 9:45 p.m. that evening.

Footage shared by onlookers showed concerned park guests observing the stalled coaster as riders remained suspended. Park officials confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident.

Clark stated that the issue stemmed from a car accident involving a motorist who crashed into a utility pole in the area, cutting off the power supply to the ride.

The new attraction has been heavily promoted by Cedar Point leading up to its debut, with the park highlighting the ride’s record-breaking features. “Siren’s Curse” has been marketed as a major addition to Cedar Point’s lineup of thrill rides.

The park previously faced national scrutiny in 2021 when debris from its Top Thrill Dragster ride, a 420-foot coaster, struck a woman standing below.

The incident led to the closure of the ride and the remainder of the park season. In 2022, investigators cleared the park of any wrongdoing in connection with that case.

Despite the setback on opening day, Cedar Point resumed operations of “Siren’s Curse” later in the evening. No additional disruptions have been reported since the incident.
