President Donald Trump has approved the deployment of 200 U.S. Marines to Florida in support of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, following a formal request for military assistance from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in May.

The move comes just weeks after Trump authorized the deployment of 700 Marines to Los Angeles to assist with anti-immigration protests, a decision that drew backlash from California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The deployment to Florida is part of a broader national initiative to bolster immigration enforcement in key states including Louisiana and Texas.

“These Marines are the first wave of U.S. Northern Command’s support of this ICE mission,” U.S. Northern Command said in a statement. Officials noted that additional deployments are expected to follow in the coming weeks.

According to the Department of Defense and DHS, the Marines assigned to Florida will carry out only non-law enforcement functions within ICE facilities.

Their duties will focus on administrative and logistical support, allowing ICE agents to concentrate on arrests, investigations, and tracking individuals suspected of immigration violations.

“They are specifically prohibited from direct contact with individuals in ICE custody or involvement in any aspect of the custody chain,” Northern Command stated.

Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin confirmed to CBS News that the Marines “will be trained and ready to assist with immigration processing at locations across the state of Florida.”

She described the action as part of a “whole-of-government approach to deliver on President Trump’s mandate from the American people to remove public safety threats from American communities.”

The deployment coincides with the passage of Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” which he signed into law on July 4, following its approval in Congress.

The legislation totals $3.3 trillion in new tax cuts and spending measures, including a $150 billion increase in funding for border security and immigration enforcement.

According to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office, the bill’s tax cuts will cost $4.5 trillion over the next decade.

To offset the cost, Republicans included $1.2 trillion in spending cuts, primarily through reductions to Medicaid.

The law allocates $46 billion to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for construction of border walls and security improvements, along with $30 billion for ICE expansion efforts.

The increase in ICE funding has drawn criticism from progressive lawmakers, particularly Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

“I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Bluesky.

“This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion — making ICE bigger than the FBI, US Bureau of Prisons, DEA and others combined.”

“It is setting up to make what’s happening now look like child’s play,” she added, warning, “People are disappearing.”

🚨 LMAO! Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sounds the alarm that ICE just got an “EXPLOSION” of funds thanks to the Big Beautiful Bill.

“I don’t think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.”

Actually, 77 MILLION PEOPLE are prepared, and it’s long overdue!

The legislation has also stirred debate within Republican circles, with figures like Elon Musk criticizing the scope of spending. Musk described the bill as “political suicide” due to its financial scale.

President Trump has made clear that his administration is preparing for the largest mass deportation effort in U.S. history. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth authorized up to 700 additional military personnel for ICE support roles across Florida, Louisiana, and Texas.

At least 8,500 troops are currently deployed along the U.S.-Mexico border for wall construction and enforcement operations.

In Florida, Trump also promoted the opening of a new immigration detention facility nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” located in the Everglades and surrounded by swampland. Approximately 70 Florida National Guard troops will staff the site.

During a Tuesday tour of the facility, Trump said it could serve as a model for similar detention centers in other states.

“Pretty soon, this facility will handle the most menacing migrants, some of the most vicious people on the planet,” Trump said.

“The only way out, really, is deportation.”

Trump said the nickname was “very appropriate because I looked outside and that’s not a place I want to go hiking anytime soon.”

He also floated the idea that similar sites could be established in “many states” and raised the possibility of deporting U.S. citizens found to be violating immigration laws.

The expanded operations mark a significant shift in federal immigration enforcement policy as the administration prepares for increased removals and processing capacity under the provisions of the newly enacted law.
