In a harrowing and tragic scene at one of Italy’s busiest airports, a man died Tuesday after being sucked into the engine of a taxiing aircraft in what local authorities suspect was a suicide.

The incident occurred at Bergamo Orio al Serio International Airport, the third-busiest airport in Italy, and caused a temporary shutdown of airport operations.

According to the Italian national news agency ANSA, the man, who has not yet been identified, was neither a passenger on the flight nor an employee of the airport.

He is reported to have bypassed security checks before sprinting across the tarmac toward an aircraft that was in motion.

Local authorities believe the man intentionally entered the airfield to end his life.

ANSA reported that he was seen running toward the aircraft moments before being pulled into the engine, which was active and preparing for takeoff.

The aircraft involved in the tragedy was an Airbus A319 operated by Volotea, a Spanish budget airline.

The flight, designated V73511, was scheduled to travel from Bergamo to Asturias in northern Spain.

At the time of the incident, the plane had completed boarding and was taxiing away from the terminal toward the runway for departure.

Volotea addressed the event in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“We’re investigating reports of an incident involving our flight V73511 BGY-OVD, which occurred on the ground after boarding was completed and ready for departure.

We’re aware that one individual has sustained serious injuries involving the aircraft engine. More information soon.”

Airport officials quickly suspended all air traffic following the incident.

“The airport, Italy’s third-busiest, confirmed the suspension of traffic ‘due to a problem that occurred on the taxiway,’” ANSA reported, citing an official post on the airport’s social media channels.

Flight operations were halted for nearly two hours while emergency personnel responded and investigators began examining the scene. Passengers aboard the Volotea flight were safely removed from the aircraft, and the area was cordoned off by authorities.

The identity and motive of the deceased man are still under investigation. However, the working theory among authorities is that the event was a suicide.

Surveillance footage and eyewitness testimony will be key in helping officials understand how the man breached airport security and managed to reach an active taxiway.

While rare, incidents involving unauthorized individuals accessing active airport runways have occurred in the past, often resulting in catastrophic outcomes.

Tuesday’s tragedy raises serious questions about security protocols at Italian airports, particularly how a civilian with no flight credentials or airport clearance could make it past multiple layers of security undetected.

We regret to inform that flight V73511 BGY-OVD involved the unfortunate death of a person not affiliated with Volotea. We extend our condolences to the family. Psychological support was provided to passengers and crew, who have now landed on a rescheduled flight to OVD.

This event has also sparked conversations about mental health and the urgent need for greater awareness, support, and prevention resources—especially in high-risk environments where a momentary breach can lead to fatal consequences.

Mental health professionals urge anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts or feelings of hopelessness to seek help immediately.

In the U.S., individuals in crisis can contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988 or visiting SuicidePreventionLifeline.org. In New York City, residents can access free and confidential mental health counseling by calling 888-NYC-WELL.

As investigators continue their work, the aviation community, the passengers who witnessed the aftermath, and the broader public are left grappling with the gravity of what occurred.

The tragedy at Bergamo serves as a painful reminder of the silent battles individuals may be facing—and the importance of both robust security and mental health support in preventing such losses.
