Mayor Karen Bass announced Tuesday that the City of Los Angeles has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in an effort to block ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations across the city.

The legal action comes amid rising tensions over federal immigration enforcement efforts in the area, including a high-profile ICE raid in MacArthur Park on Monday.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court, seeks an immediate injunction to stop further raids conducted by ICE and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in Los Angeles.

Mayor Bass stated that the operations unfairly target individuals based on race and ethnicity.

“It is critical that we use every single venue, every single possibility of seeking justice, and that’s what we’re doing today,” Bass said during a press conference.

“And I do hope that the courts especially issue this injunction and stop this.”

Mayor Bass emphasized unity in her remarks. “But one thing about our city, and I say this every time because I think it’s so important, our city is definitely united. You don’t see dissension here. You see a city that is united because this is who we are,” she added.

“We are a city of immigrants, and we will stand with Angelenos regardless of what country they came from, when they got here or why they’re here. And, so, with that, I am proud to stand in unity as we file this lawsuit and seek justice, and hopefully that will come in the form of an injunction,” Bass said.

On Monday, Bass was seen at the site of an ICE operation in MacArthur Park, where she demanded that federal agents withdraw.

In video footage captured by Fox 11 Los Angeles, she stated, “They need to leave and they need to leave right now!”

ICE activity in the city has sparked multiple protests throughout the summer, including a wave of riots in June following enforcement actions in Los Angeles County.

In response to the escalating unrest, President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard after two consecutive days of violent confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement.

Democratic lawmakers and officials have also pushed back against immigration enforcement operations at the state and local levels.

In May, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and New Jersey Representatives Robert Menendez, LaMonica McIver, and Bonnie Watson Coleman were denied entry to the Delaney Hall Detention Facility, where they attempted to check on detainees.

In a separate incident in June, Representative Maxine Waters attempted to access the Los Angeles Federal Building to check on SEIU Local President David Huerta, who had been detained during ICE activity. Waters was also denied entry.

The Trump administration has continued to emphasize its commitment to enforcing federal immigration law, citing the need for national security and public safety.

ICE and CBP officials have not commented publicly on the Los Angeles lawsuit or the demands made by Mayor Bass.

The lawsuit represents the latest legal challenge in a series of state and local efforts to push back against federal immigration enforcement.

It remains unclear how the federal courts will respond to Los Angeles’ request for an injunction, or whether additional cities will follow suit.
