The deep state blob is highly resistant to change, especially when that change threatens to upend years of accepted D.C. wisdom and policy. In fact, it’s hostile to anything or anyone who wants to reform the system from within. One of President Donald Trump’s most impressive nominees, who rose in prominence precisely because he wanted to shake things up at the Pentagon, is now finding himself in the crosshairs of a coordinated campaign to ruin his reputation and purge him from the administration.
Elbridge Colby’s nomination to the powerful position of Under Secretary of Defense for Policy was not without a fight. An America First foreign policy realist, Colby served in the Department of Defense during the first Trump administration, but was never as hawkish on Iran as others in the Republican establishment. Instead, he has long argued that China poses a far greater threat to national security and American interests than the Ayatollah regime, and that the United States should shift its focus away from the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific to counter the CCP’s influence in the region. In February, several neoconservatives, including Sens. Roger Wicker and Tom Cotton, pushed back against his nomination to the second Trump admin, but were ultimately thwarted. Now, a faction of anonymous officials is launching the latest salvo in an attempt to destroy Colby and portray him as a rogue bureaucrat who is sowing chaos and undermining Trump’s agenda.
