Republican Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton filed for divorce from her husband, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, on Thursday.

She filed the petition in Collin County, according to KUT News. The impending split comes as the attorney general wages a high-profile campaign to unseat incumbent Republican Sen. John Cornyn in 2026. (RELATED: AG Paxton Leads Sen. Cornyn By Double Digits In Texas Senate Race, Poll Shows)

“Today, after 38 years of marriage, I filed for divorce on biblical grounds,” Angela Paxton wrote on X. “I believe marriage is a sacred covenant and I have earnestly pursued reconciliation. Paxton previously admitted to an extramarital affair during a 2018 meeting with his staff and wife, according to the Texas Tribune. At the time, he said the relationship had ended and pledged to repair his marriage.

The woman involved was later called as a witness during Paxton’s 2023 impeachment trial, though both sides agreed she was “unavailable to testify,” Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said. (RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: Paxton Accuses Cornyn Of Flip-Flopping On Leftist Groups As TX Senate Race Heats Up)

Paxton’s alleged affair was publicly detailed for the first time during the impeachment proceedings, with former chief of staff Katherine “Missy” Cary testifying about how she discovered the relationship and confronted him, the Tribune separately reported.

After facing the pressures of countless political attacks and public scrutiny, Angela and I have decided to start a new chapter in our lives.

I could not be any more proud or grateful for the incredible family that God has blessed us with, and I remain committed to supporting…

Cary told lawmakers she warned Paxton the affair left him vulnerable to potential bribery — a central allegation in the impeachment case — and could compromise his ability to serve.
