A televised exchange between Democratic strategist Karen Finney and Republican strategist Scott Jennings took a sharp turn Thursday night when Finney recounted a meeting dedicated to strategizing ways to defeat President Donald Trump.

Jennings, reacting to the story, responded with laughter and a pointed question about the outcome.

The exchange occurred during a political discussion on CNN, days after President Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.

Trump secured 322 electoral votes to Harris’s 226, reclaiming the presidency with a decisive win.

Finney, discussing the coalition of anti-Trump conservatives and Democrats who joined forces in an attempt to stop Trump from returning to the White House, recalled a specific meeting held before the election.

“I think we also can’t ignore, not only [former Republican Lt. Gov.] Geoff [Duncan of Georgia] and the divides here at the table, but the millions of people, thousands of people who consider themselves anti-Trump, who were once Republicans, and a whole movement of Republicans who — I mean, I can remember sitting at a meeting leading up to this election, I’ve got Bill Kristol sitting here, I’ve got, you know, former friends, conservatives from across the aisle. We were all aligned in how do we defeat Trump. It was a meeting to—”

Before Finney could complete her sentence, Jennings interrupted with a question: “How did it work out?”

The interruption caused Finney to pause as Jennings laughed.

“You know what, Scott—” she began before Jennings added, “Just asking,” while continuing to laugh.

Bill Kristol, a longtime conservative commentator and editor-at-large of The Bulwark, has been one of the most vocal members of the “Never Trump” movement.

Kristol declared himself a Democrat during Trump’s first term and participated in multiple efforts to oppose Trump’s candidacy, including in 2024.

Groups such as The Lincoln Project, also composed of former Republican operatives, spent millions opposing Trump during both the 2020 and 2024 election cycles.

Despite their combined efforts, President Trump won handily, carrying multiple battleground states and securing a strong mandate among Republican voters.

According to a YouGov poll conducted July 4–7, Trump held an 87% approval rating among Republicans following his return to office.

Since retaking office, Trump has secured several major policy victories. On Friday, he signed a reconciliation bill that made permanent the 2017 tax cuts initially passed during his first term.

The legislation was passed with Republican majorities in both chambers of Congress.

In addition to domestic policy wins, Trump’s administration carried out a high-profile military operation in Iran on June 22.

The United States launched strikes against nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

The operation involved seven B-2A Spirit bombers in a 37-hour mission using up to 14 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators, causing significant damage to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Trump has also notched legal victories at the U.S. Supreme Court.

Recent rulings have upheld his authority to end nationwide injunctions, reduce the federal workforce, and deport foreign nationals to third countries.

These decisions mark a shift in the federal judiciary’s approach to executive authority under Trump.

The candid exchange between Finney and Jennings on live television underscored the continued frustration among Democratic and anti-Trump figures, even months after the 2024 election.

While some in the coalition had expected their cross-ideological alliance to slow or stop Trump’s return to power, the results of the election—and the actions of the Trump administration since—indicate otherwise.
