A new national poll reveals that nearly half of registered voters in the United States are open to the idea of a third political party—but have little interest in supporting Elon Musk’s newly proposed “America Party.”
As The New York Post reported, the Quinnipiac University poll, conducted between July 10 and 14, found that 49% of voters said they would consider joining a third party, while 45% said they would not.
However, when asked specifically about Musk’s America Party, 77% of respondents rejected the idea of joining it, with just 17% expressing support.

“There is a healthy appetite for a third party among American voters. But with Elon Musk leading the way, not so much,” said Quinnipiac polling analyst Tim Malloy.
Musk announced the formation of the America Party earlier this month, following his public criticism of congressional Republicans for passing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
The legislation, which was signed into law by President Trump on July 4, drew Musk’s ire for what he described as bloated spending and a failure to address the growing federal deficit.
Musk, who had been brought into the Trump administration to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), had previously made deficit reduction his primary goal.

After the bill’s passage, he called it “pork-filled” and a “disgusting abomination,” adding that it undermined the work done by DOGE.
In the aftermath, Musk announced his intention to build a centrist political alternative aimed at influencing key congressional races. He has released few details about the party’s platform, but his move has not gained traction with voters according to the latest polling data.
Musk had previously avoided direct involvement in partisan politics but became an outspoken supporter of President Trump following the July 2024 assassination attempt. During the election cycle, Musk contributed $290 million in support of Trump and Republican candidates.
Despite Musk’s financial backing and administrative role, President Trump dismissed the America Party idea as “ridiculous,” stating, “Third parties have never worked.”
Quinnipiac surveyed 1,290 registered voters nationwide. The poll has a margin of error of ±2.7 percentage points.
Separate registration data compiled by Ballotpedia shows 37% of registered voters currently identify as Democrats, 31% as Republicans, and 32% as Independents. A Gallup poll also found that 43% of respondents consider themselves independents.
Musk’s dissatisfaction with the current system and his frustrations over the legislative process have yet to translate into meaningful support for his new political effort.
