Former MSNBC host Joy Reid appeared on Piers Morgan Uncensored Thursday, where a tense exchange unfolded over the cancellation of her show, The ReidOut. Reid, who has repeatedly suggested that her dismissal was racially motivated, was challenged by host Piers Morgan, who attributed the end of her show to declining ratings.

“Joy, I mean, let’s be honest. I don’t think you were fired after all those years because of your skin color, or because you’re a Black woman. I think you were fired because your show just got increasingly unpopular,” Morgan said during the interview.

The ReidOut was officially canceled in February 2025 as part of a broader programming reshuffle at MSNBC.

According to Nielsen data, Reid’s show averaged 973,000 total viewers in February 2025, down from 1.3 million in February 2024—a 28% drop.

Reid has previously stated that her viewership decline was less severe than other programs on the network and has maintained that she was not given a clear explanation for the cancellation.

When Morgan questioned why Reid was attributing her show’s cancellation to her race rather than acknowledging the ratings decline, Reid fired back.

“I love the fact that your ‘play the race card’ is your version of the race card. You literally are so fixated on trying to racialize conversations with me, Piers, I actually find it quite charming—” Reid began.

Morgan interrupted, saying, “You racialize more conversations in your tenure at MSNBC than any host in history.”

Reid’s program was frequently cited for its controversial racial commentary, particularly directed at Black Republicans and conservative figures.

In prior broadcasts, Reid referred to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as “Uncle Clarence,” criticized Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) as a token presence for Republicans by saying he was present for a “patina of diversity,” and referred to Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) in 2021 as the “Black guy the Republicans love to roll out.”

She previously told Marc Lamont Hill during a podcast interview that being a Black woman made some White viewers “angrier” when they disagreed with her commentary.

During the interview with Morgan, Reid referenced that podcast appearance, saying, “You take an entire conversation I had with Marc Lamont Hill and pick the bits that you can racialize because this is your schtick.”

Morgan replied, “You racialize everything Joy, come on… It’s not my schtick, it was your schtick, but people got bored with it.”

Reid continued to push back, suggesting Morgan was applying a double standard based on race.

“You’re a White European, and when people of color talk about our lived experience in this country, it gets you angry,” she said.

Morgan denied that characterization and later brought up past controversies involving Reid.

He questioned her about resurfaced blog posts from 2018 that included homophobic content from a Florida-based blog Reid had previously authored.

Reid had faced widespread criticism over those posts, which she initially claimed were the result of hacking before later admitting the content was likely hers.

The interview remained contentious throughout, with both Morgan and Reid speaking over one another and disputing each other’s interpretations of past remarks and motivations.

Reid did not offer any new information regarding her departure from MSNBC but maintained that she believes race was a significant factor in her firing.
