One of the reporters behind the Wall Street Journal article, Joe Palazzolo, previously worked for Main Justice, a publication founded by Mary Jacoby.

Jacoby is the wife of Glenn Simpson, the co-founder of Fusion GPS, the firm responsible for compiling the Steele Dossier.

That dossier, which was funded by the Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee, contained false allegations about Trump’s ties to Russia and helped launch years of investigations into now-debunked claims of collusion.

Palazzolo joined The Wall Street Journal’s investigations unit in 2019 after covering the U.S. Department of Justice, courts, and gun laws at Main Justice.

The reemergence of these ties in the context of the Journal’s Epstein story has raised questions about whether politically connected media networks are once again targeting Trump ahead of the next election cycle.

President Trump has strongly denied the Wall Street Journal’s report and on July 19 filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the paper, its parent company Dow Jones, and News Corp.

Trump maintains that the alleged Epstein birthday letter is fabricated and that the report is “100% fake.”

A spokesperson for Dow Jones responded to the lawsuit saying, “We have full confidence in the rigor and accuracy of our reporting, and will vigorously defend against any lawsuit.”

The Wall Street Journal and Fusion GPS share more than a historical connection through Jacoby and Simpson.

Both Simpson and Jacoby previously worked at the Journal prior to launching their political opposition research firm.

Their transition from mainstream journalism into partisan research operations has drawn criticism from lawmakers and watchdog groups.

The resurfacing of these figures in another high-profile story involving President Trump has reignited concerns that the same media infrastructure responsible for promoting the now-discredited Russia allegations is again being used to push unverified claims tied to politically explosive subjects like Jeffrey Epstein.
