An off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent was shot in the face during an attempted robbery by a moped-riding illegal alien in a New York City park late Saturday night, according to law enforcement sources.

The federal agent, despite his injuries, returned fire and wounded the assailant, who is now in custody.

The incident occurred around 11:50 p.m. in Fort Washington Park, located along the Hudson River in Manhattan.

The 42-year-old agent was sitting on a rock with a female companion when two men on a moped approached them and initiated a robbery, according to police sources.

During a struggle, one of the suspects opened fire, hitting the agent in the face and left forearm.

Despite being seriously wounded, the agent drew his firearm and returned fire, striking one of the assailants multiple times.

The suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, sustained three gunshot wounds.

Mora later walked into a hospital in the Bronx seeking treatment and was taken into custody.

The second suspect remains at large as of Sunday.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Kristi Noem confirmed that Mora is a Dominican national who entered the United States illegally through the southern border in April 2023.

He was reportedly released from custody at the time due to insufficient detention space and given a notice to appear before an immigration judge.

Mora has a lengthy criminal record in the United States. According to sources, he was wanted on active kidnapping and weapons charges in Massachusetts at the time of the shooting.

In New York City, Mora had been arrested at least four times and was released without bail on each occasion.

In August 2024, Mora was arrested twice within days — once for allegedly assaulting a pregnant woman, and again for threatening to kill another migrant with a machete.

In November 2024, he was arrested for violating an order of protection. A bench warrant for his arrest was issued in January 2025.

Despite this pattern of criminal activity, Mora was not detained by immigration authorities or held in custody by local officials.

Sources say his prior arrests in New York resulted in his release under the city’s bail reform policies.

The injured federal agent is currently undergoing surgery and is in stable condition, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and law enforcement officials continue to search for the second suspect involved in the robbery. DHS and the NYPD have not released further details at this time.

Mora is expected to face multiple charges related to the shooting, including attempted murder, armed robbery, and illegal possession of a firearm.

He is also likely to face federal immigration violations stemming from his unlawful entry and failure to appear in court.

This incident adds to growing concerns over the handling of repeat offenders and immigration enforcement in sanctuary cities like New York, where cooperation with federal authorities is limited.
