A Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into a school campus in the capital city on Monday, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 170 others in what officials are calling the deadliest aviation accident in the capital in recent memory, as reported by The Daily Mail.
The Chinese-built F-7 BGI fighter trainer aircraft experienced a “technical malfunction” shortly after takeoff from A.K. Khandaker Air Base at 1:06 p.m. local time.

The pilot, Flight Lt. Mohammed Toukir Islam, attempted to steer the aircraft away from heavily populated areas but ultimately collided with Milestone School and College in the Uttara neighborhood, roughly seven miles from the air base.
The impact caused a massive fire that quickly engulfed a two-story school building, where many students were attending classes. Emergency responders rescued 171 people, many of them students suffering from burns and other injuries.

Victims were transported by helicopter, motorized rickshaws, and carried by firefighters and parents. At least 60 students, most between the ages of 12 and 16, were transferred to a burn treatment hospital.
The Air Force confirmed that Flight Lt. Islam was killed in the crash. “The pilot made every effort to divert the aircraft away from densely populated areas toward a more sparsely inhabited location,” the military said in a statement.
Scenes of panic and chaos unfolded at the crash site, with families frantically searching for their children. Eyewitnesses described buildings shaking from the impact followed by an explosion.
Video footage showed thick smoke and flames rising from the crash scene as terrified students fled the area.

“When I came here, I saw there was a huge fire. There was a dead body of a child. Thankfully, my daughter survived, but I saw many others burned.”
Authorities continued searching through debris late Monday using cranes and other equipment. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared Tuesday a national day of mourning, ordering flags flown at half-staff across the country.
Interim leader Muhammad Yunus pledged a full investigation, calling the incident “a moment of deep national grief.” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and offered assistance.
The crash follows a deadly aviation disaster in India last month when an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel in Ahmedabad, killing 241 passengers and 19 people on the ground.
