The Trump administration has approved a $1.26 billion contract to construct the nation’s largest detention and deportation facility at Fort Bliss, Texas.

The project is expected to significantly expand federal capacity for housing and processing illegal aliens marked for removal.

Fort Bliss, a U.S. Army post near El Paso, spans over 1.12 million acres along the U.S.-Mexico border and includes an airfield, which may assist in deportation logistics.

The new facility will accommodate up to 5,000 detainees and will likely become a central hub for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), according to a report from Bloomberg.

The facility will be comprised of tent-based housing structures equipped with heating and air-conditioning systems.

The contract has been awarded to Virginia-based Acquisition Logistics Company, with $232 million of the funding being provided by the U.S. Army.

An ICE official confirmed to Bloomberg that the federal government “is indeed pursuing all available options to expand bedspace capacity. This process does include housing detainees at certain military bases.”

The contract for the Fort Bliss center follows closely on the heels of an announcement by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth that additional detention and deportation facilities will be established at two other military installations.

Last week, Hegseth informed Congress that Camp Atterbury in central Indiana and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey will also be made available for DHS use.

The letter from Hegseth to lawmakers stated that these military bases will be available “for temporary use by the Department of Homeland Security to house illegal aliens.”

He added that the arrangement “will not negatively affect military training, operations, readiness, or other military requirements, including National Guard and Reserve readiness.”

The addition of Fort Bliss, Camp Atterbury, and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst expands the administration’s ongoing effort to increase capacity for detaining individuals subject to removal.

Since President Trump took office earlier this year, the administration has added 60 facilities to the existing network used by ICE to house illegal aliens.

Fort Bliss has been used previously for immigration-related housing.

During previous surges in border crossings, it served as a location for temporary migrant housing.

However, the scale and budget of this new project represent a significant expansion of federal enforcement infrastructure.

The use of military bases for DHS operations reflects a broader strategy by the Trump administration to streamline deportation processes and ease capacity strain on the civilian detention system.

ICE and DHS have both expressed the need for additional space due to increased enforcement activity and surges in border apprehensions.

The facility at Fort Bliss is expected to become operational upon completion of construction, though no specific timeline has yet been provided.

The funding and use of Department of Defense resources for immigration enforcement purposes have drawn congressional attention, but the administration maintains that the move will not impact core military operations.
