We Watched Kamala Harris On Colbert So You Don’t Have To. It Was A Trainwreck

These are the same risks you incur by watching former Vice President Kamala Harris’ interview with Stephen Colbert. Harris appeared on the soon-to-be-canned late show to promote her upcoming memoir, “107 Days,” the length of her failed bid for president. 

That was probably the pitch, anyhow. The nearly thirty minute conversation instead functioned to remind the public just how lucky we are Harris lost the election. 

It’s difficult to tell if the Kamala-isms have worsened in recent months, or if her retreat from the limelight into margarita limes has simply lowered the general immunity to them. Harris speaks slowly. Her articulation is poor. She begins cackling in the first minute of conversation. The interview approaches thirty minutes. The funniest quips of the interview come not from Colbert, but from Harris as she attempts an impression of a normal person. 

After the election, Harris spent “months” avoiding the news. “I, um, you know, I’m just not into self mutilation … Yeah, lots of cooking shows. Great British Bake Off and stuff like that. Kitchen is one of my favorites.” 

Colbert follows up with “one question on everyone’s mind right now. How’s Doug?” 

After smiling and giggling and clasping her hands for an appropriate length of time, Harris says of her husband, Doug Emhoff, “He’s really well.” 

But later in the interview, Harris hints at trouble in paradise.

“There’s a lot of personal stuff in the book,” Harris reveals. “I mean, poor Dougie.” 

“For example, my birthday’s in October,” Harris continues. “The election’s in November. You see where I’m going? And Dougie kind of dropped the ball on my big birthday.” 

“He didn’t get you anything,” Colbert guesses.

“Oh, you have to read the book.” 

It’s good to know Harris had her priorities in order. She was a little more generous in offering national security advice.

“So, I know I’ve been teased about this, but I like these kind of air, earpods, that have the, the thing,” she says, miming the strings on wired headphones, “Because I’ve served on the Senate Intelligence Committee. I have been in classified briefings and I’m telling you, like, don’t be on the train using your earpods and thinking somebody can’t listen to your conversation. I’m just telling you, that’s a little bit more secure.” 

Amid a heap of praise, Colbert presents a sliver of confrontation. 

“What would you do differently looking back on it? Because you were in a tough spot,” he asks of Harris’ presidential run.

“Yeah, there are things I would do differently, and, um, again —”

“Read the book. I know,” Colbert interrupts. “Read the book … We’re all going to read the book.”

There’s more than a hint of frustration in Colbert’s remarks. Harris dodges in similar fashion when the host asks almost anything about former President Joe Biden.

“What was that like, when you saw Joe Biden walk on stage at that debate and it did not go well. Spoiler, it did not go well in that debate there. Therefore, you became the candidate. Harris does not answer that question. Instead, she commends Biden for his belief “in the importance of aspiring to have integrity and to do the work on behalf of the people. And that’s where I’ll leave that.”

Even Colbert demands more.

“That’s a fine sentiment and all true. I’m just curious, did people say to you, you should be prepared for this?”

“There were some who did, but I, listen, it was Joe’s decision and he made that decision.”

Colbert proceeds to another question about Biden. It’s one Harris has fielded many times. Somehow, incredibly, it still stumps her. 

During Harris’ campaign, Colbert observes, “People are asking you to separate yourself from Joe Biden … I was one of them. What’s the difference between you and Joe Biden? That must have been difficult, because you have to differentiate yourself as a candidate and yet you respect this man who you’re still working for at the same time. What was that like to navigate?”

“I talk about that extensively in the book … You’re raising something that you and I both know is, requires a lot of, a lot more time than we probably have right now to talk about.”

Colbert rejects her mayday.

“Are we in a hurry?” He asks the audience. “Are we in a hurry guys?” The audience cheers. “Go ahead.”

“Thanks everyone,” Harris replies. 

She dodges and pivots to classic, zero-substance word salad beginning around the 25:34 mark in the video uploaded to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert YouTube channel.

“You know, this is a time for people to, you know, I mean, look, we designed our democracy with three independent co-equal branches of government,” begins Harris’ apparent critique of President Donald Trump’s administration. 

“But the Supreme Court, we knew what they were doing … But that the, the, Supreme Court basically gave whoever would be president — When I was in the campaign, I talked immunity, immunity,” she insisted. “We, we talked about that. So, this, we’re not surprised what the Supreme Court is doing. And God, thank those members of the court who write brilliant dissents and remind us of what the democracy and the rule of law is supposed to be, you know.”

“Well, thank you so much for being here.”

For all the missteps of the Harris campaign, at least she never made an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience. Harris barely manages thirty minutes with an obsequious talk show host. A three-hour conversation about DMT-addled monkeys would probably short circuit her brain.
