Judge in Baltimore Declares Open Season on Pro-Life Protesters

What happens when a 28-year-old “snaps” and attacks a 73-year-old and an 84-year-old because they are pro-life?

After he was found guilty, Judge Yvette Michelle Bryant sentenced him to one year of home confinement.

The case is much worse than the capsule description I just provided. Patrick Brice says he was having a bad day, and when he saw these elderly pro-lifers, he “just snapped.” He knocked out the 84-year-old and permanently injured the 73-year-old, blinding him in one eye after breaking his orbital bone. 

On May 26, 2023, Brice said, he intended to debate Richard Schaefer outside the Planned Parenthood Baltimore Health Center on North Howard Street about the concept of sin.

But Brice said he lost it after Schaefer made what he perceived to be a racial comment. That’s when Brice tackled him into a flowerpot and then attacked another anti-abortion protester, Mark Crosby, who rushed to Schaefer’s aid.

“I just snapped one day,” Brice said Thursday in the Elijah E. Cummings Courthouse before apologizing to both men.

Oh. Then, that’s all right, you know. If you snap, it’s open season on elderly people with whom you disagree. Everybody understands that. 

Though prosecutors pushed for a sentence of 10 years in prison, Baltimore Circuit Judge Yvette M. Bryant spared Brice, 28, now of Harford County, incarceration. She ordered him to spend one year on home detention — plus three years’ probation.

Brice must complete anger management classes, undergo drug and alcohol screening, take part in any recommended treatment and remain in therapy. That’s along with virtually attending Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

“What about my rights and my well-being?” Crosby shouted at Bryant as she left the bench.

As a white Christian colonizer, Crosby has no rights. Obviously. 

“This was not a minor altercation between two parties with differing views on abortion. It was a vicious, targeted assault on two senior citizens whose only ‘offense’ was praying for expectant mothers and offering life-affirming alternatives to abortion,” Tom Brejcha, the President and Chief Counsel of the conservative law firm Thomas More Society, said in a statement.

“One of the victims was knocked unconscious. The other suffered broken facial bones and a lifelong eye impairment. This was an act of cowardice and cruelty, and sheer mayhem. This crime deserves far more serious consequences than a ‘get out of jail free’ card and a one-year home detention that amounts to nothing more than a slap on the wrist,” he added.

We are well past the point where judges even try to give the appearance of impartial justice. It is raw politics now, and in Blue cities the rule is that anybody who can be considered remotely conservative is presumed to be a bad person, deserving of whatever evil is done to them. 

In New York, Daniel Penny can save a subway car-load of passengers from a madman threatening them all, and he is the one who gets charged by the District Attorney. Antifa “protesters” can rampage through the streets without consequence, while police and bystanders must suffer whatever the rioters dish out. 

Meanwhile, Crosby spent three days at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center and twice landed back in the emergency room. He suffered injuries including an orbital fracture, and the attack has left him with permanent damage to his right eye.

A jury found Brice guilty of two counts of second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.

Assistant Public Defender Matthew Connell, Brice’s attorney, said his client has always expressed regret for the crime.

“I’ve never tried to justify this, nor has Mr. Brice,” Connell said. “He is remorseful.”

Leftists can attack and permanently cripple anybody they like, including those 45 to 55 years older than they are. At least the judge required an apology. Antifa protesters get a pass most of the time. 

I am old enough to remember the insanity of the 1970s, when New York City was anticipating that Snake Pliskin would soon be roaming the city, helping people escape from New York, which had been converted into a prison.

Things aren’t quite that bad, and never got there in the 20th century. But Blue city judges and mayors are trying their best. 

But Assistant State’s Attorney Ashley Sudberry urged the judge to send a message with her sentence that attacking two older men in broad daylight on the street in Baltimore for their religious or political views will not be tolerated.

Crosby’s attorney, Terrell Roberts, read a lengthy statement on his behalf in which he wrote that the attack demonstrated a “gross disregard for the law and human decency.”

Human decency? What an outdated concept.
