A Los Angeles Times columnist has called for the city to withdraw from hosting the 2028 Summer Olympics, citing opposition to President Donald Trump’s role in overseeing federal preparations for the event, as reported by Fox News.

In his column, Gustavo Arellano expressed concern that Trump, as head of the White House Olympics Task Force, would use the games — scheduled for July 14–30, 2028 — to promote his policies and political image.

Arellano described the federal involvement in Olympic security as expected, but said Trump’s leadership makes the situation “problematic.”

“The federal government was always going to play a role in providing security for the 2028 Olympics, just as it has for previous Games in the U.S. But Trump, as the head of the task force, now gets to personally oversee our own siege,” Arellano wrote.

The columnist argued that Trump could use the next three years of Olympic preparations to “humiliate blue L.A.” and to showcase his immigration enforcement policies.

Arellano warned that during the Games, Trump might “proclaim his mission accomplished” in a Los Angeles he described as “radically transformed by his deportation blitzkrieg.”

Arellano criticized Casey Wasserman, chair of the Los Angeles 2028 organizing committee, for praising Trump during the announcement of his role.

He also took aim at other administration officials present at the event, including Vice President J.D. Vance and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

He noted that Trump also mentioned White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, referring to him as an “MVP candidate.”

The opinion piece also questioned whether Los Angeles should give Trump and his administration what Arellano described as “more opportunities to make life miserable” in the city.

He argued that public funds should not be spent on an event he believes Trump will use to bolster his political legacy.

“I don’t want my money going toward something that Trump will use to bolster his noxious legacy,” Arellano wrote. “I’m not going to cheer on Wasserman as he chums up Trump while la migra continues to terrorize L.A., possibly for months, if not years.”

The term “la migra” is slang for U.S. immigration enforcement agencies, including ICE and the Border Patrol.

Migrant plead with the Texas National Guard to be let in on the north embankment of the Rio Grande in El Paso, Texas in order to be processed by Border Patrol on March 20, 2024.

The city was awarded hosting rights for the 2028 Games in 2017. The White House responded to the column on Thursday, with spokesperson Anna Kelly telling Fox News Digital:

“It’s a shame that LA Times ‘columnists’ are so filled with Trump Derangement Syndrome that they would turn away such a unifying event as the Olympics, which are expected to generate $18 billion in economic activity. With world-class showman President Trump at the helm of the White House Olympics Task Force, these games will effectively bring the country together and showcase all that makes America great.”
