Several Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s deputies came under fire Wednesday while serving warrants and a protective order at a residence in rural southern Virginia, as reported by The New York Post.

The incident occurred in Gretna, a small community near the Virginia–North Carolina border. According to Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor, deputies approached the home when they were met with gunfire, prompting an immediate call for backup.

Rep. John McGuire (R-Va.) confirmed the shooting on social media, writing, “My thoughts and prayers are with the deputies who were shot in Pittsylvania County, as well as their families. We are closely following the situation and keeping everyone affected in our hearts during this difficult time.”

Taylor said two deputies were struck by shrapnel during the gunfire. A third deputy was taken to the emergency department out of what he described as “an abundance of caution” and has since been released.

Following the initial exchange of gunfire, a standoff developed between law enforcement and the suspect. The situation ended when the suspect surrendered without further violence.

Authorities identified the suspect as 41-year-old James Andru Lehnerd. He was taken into custody at the scene and is currently awaiting formal charges.

A significant law enforcement presence remained in the area late Wednesday, with multiple agencies assisting at the scene as investigators processed evidence.

The Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released additional details about the incident or the charges Lehnerd will face. Fox News Digital reported that requests for further information from the sheriff’s office had not yet been answered by Wednesday evening.

The rural county, located along the southern edge of Virginia, borders North Carolina and includes several small towns and unincorporated communities.

Gretna, where the shooting took place, is roughly 30 miles north of Danville and is known for its quiet neighborhoods and farming communities.

Authorities have not released details on the nature of the warrants or the protective order deputies were attempting to serve before the shooting began. No further injuries were reported among responding officers or civilians.
