The actions of congresscritters baffles me sometimes. I’m not sure if they’re very smart, very stupid, very clueless, or some combination thereof. Some of the things they do make little sense. Some things are cleverly hidden outside of view, and other things just are what they are, but there’s not enough consistency to know what their game is much of the time.

Enter Reps. Jerry Nadler and Dan Golden.

See, they’ve introduced a House resolution that would, among other things, condemn the Manhattan shooting. That seems like no big deal, but it’s the “among other things” that makes this so ridiculous.

Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-12) and Dan Goldman (NY-10) introduced a resolution condemning the July 28th Midtown Manhattan mass shooting that took the lives of four individuals and the shooter. The resolution commemorates the individuals killed and reiterates the dire need for Congress to ban assault weapons, enact universal background checks, and implement red flag laws. The gunman exploited weak gun laws in Nevada to purchase a military-style semi-automatic weapon before transporting it to New York City, where such weapons are illegal to buy or possess.

Now, no one has an issue condemning a massacre. That’s really not even necessary, though, because no one supports such things. At least not this one.

The fact that they’re tacking a call for gun control, though, is odd.

If Congress were willing to join together to call for gun control, why not just pass it? What good would come from a House resolution calling on the House to pass something completely different?

Unless, of course, it’s a pathetic attempt to try and leverage guilt into a call for gun control.

No one wants to be accused of failing to condemn an attack like this. It has the potential to come back and bite them in the butt later, especially in battleground districts. So these lawmakers will have to decide what they want to risk: a call for gun control or not condemning a massacre. Neither is particularly attractive to many.

The thing is, though, even if they did agree, voting on gun control would be a separate vote entirely. The resolution wouldn’t be binding, and would actually allow those members of Congress being pressed to get a win/win out of it.

Or maybe I’m reading too much into and these two are just stupid enough to think this resolution is all they need to do, that this will somehow change something, or at least make them look good for the folks back home.

I mean, it’s not difficult to believe that they’re absolute morons. They’re anti-gun congressmen, after all. Those two tend to go hand-in-hand.

In the end, nothing will come of this, but I’d really like to know what the endgame is supposed to be here. I don’t know if this is an act of almost brilliance, of absolute stupidity, or something else, but mostly, I want to know the goal so I’ll have a better idea of just how to make fun of them for it.

One has to have their priorities, after all.
