Judge Makes Final Decision In Sorority Transgender Case Without Seeming To Know What A Woman Is

Underage drinking. Bass-boosted beats. A tubby dude in a tennis skirt.

Welcome to Greek life circa 2025.

U.S. District Judge Alan B. Johnson dismissed a lawsuit from former University of Wyoming sorority girls, who sued Kappa Kappa Gamma after it admitted a “transgender woman,” in Johnson’s words.

Dallin “Artemis” Langford, who claims to be transgender, was admitted to a Wyoming University sorority.

While in the sorority house, Langford was accused of watching women, sometimes with an “erection visible through his leggings,” according to a lawsuit filed by KKG sisters,… https://t.co/EOwU2lxHFr pic.twitter.com/aGZqUz0cOt

Johnson dismissed the sorority girls’ initial complaint “on the grounds that the sorority was free, as a private organization, to define the word ‘woman’ in its bylaws however it wanted, and therefore the sorority was not contractually obligated to reject transwomen members.”

“Nothing in the Bylaws or the Standing Rules requires Kappa to narrowly define the words ‘women’ or ‘woman’ to include only those individuals born with a certain set of reproductive organs,” Johnson continues.

Word games of this sort render great chunks of the law meaningless. Any plaintiff in a sex discrimination suit would be wise to claim “womanhood” or “manhood,” as it benefits their defense. “Your honor, my company is entirely woman-owned and operated. We’re all just deeply closeted transvestites.”

Kappa offers a confused definition for “woman.”

“For the purposes of participation in Panhellenic recruitment, woman is defined as an individual who consistently lives and self-identifies as a woman,” reads a Kappa document issued to members in 2022, according to Johnson.

Kappa leadership, I beg you: Seek remedial second-grade education. A definition which hinges on the word it is defining is useless.

A better one can be found in the sorority girls’ 2023 complaint: “A woman is an adult human female. An adult human male is not a woman, no matter how he chooses to describe himself.”

Language emerges from a singular purpose: communication. There’s great utility to communicating, for instance, that there are a group of things known as “lions” approaching. Run.

“Man” and “woman” are also useful categories. They gesture at a distinction so fundamental, even Kappa can’t help but recognize it. The sorority differentiates between woman and woman-identified. The former is. The latter only claims to be.

Kappa advertised themselves as a “sisterhood for women only,” the plaintiffs claim in their initial complaint.

The girls “would not have joined Kappa Kappa Gamma if the Sorority’s recruiters or printed recruitment information had disclosed that the Sorority also admits men who claim to identify as women,” according to their complaint. The girls claimed they were the victims of fraud. (RELATED: Sorority Rush Videos Are Good For America)

Johnson disagreed. “Plaintiffs’ claim fails because they cannot point to any statement by Kappa that was false: Kappa has never asserted that it does not accept transgender women.”

That would seem to beg the definition of a woman. To refer to a man as a woman is to render both categories null. Which is probably the ultimate end of our linguistic tyrants.

If you deprive people of the language to describe their reality, you deprive them of their ability to resist your impositions on reality.
