CNN host Abby Phillip is facing scrutiny after suggesting that violent threats against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and their families are risks “they just have to take” as part of their jobs.

The remarks came during a panel discussion as attacks on federal immigration agents have sharply increased in recent months.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, assaults on ICE officials rose by 830 percent between January 21 and July 14, compared with the same time period in 2024.

Incidents have included agents being shot at, as well as targeted with rocks and other projectiles.

Two officers, one federal and one local, were wounded by gunfire in separate incidents in New York and Texas, highlighting the growing danger faced by law enforcement officials.

ICE agents and their families have also been targeted by a doxxing app, with personal information including home addresses and children’s school locations being posted online.

DHS officials noted that in some cases, Democrat politicians have participated in doxxing efforts in real time.

During the CNN discussion, political commentator Scott Jennings recounted a recent interview with ICE Director Todd Lyons on his radio program.

Jennings said he pressed Lyons about the increased use of masks among ICE agents.

“I asked him point-blank about the masks,” Jennings explained.

“He said, ‘I don’t like the masks, I wish we didn’t have to do the masks. Back in March, we weren’t. But something changed.’”

Jennings said Lyons made clear that the change came after agents were increasingly doxxed and their families were exposed to potential harm.

“‘People started doxxing these ICE agents, posting their personal information, posting where their families are, posting where their kids’ schools are. Putting them and their families in jeopardy and he doesn’t want them to have to do it,’” Lyons told him.

Phillip responded, “That is a risk that every law enforcement faces… every one.”

Jennings appeared taken aback and asked, “You think they should face that risk?”

Phillip clarified, “I’m not saying that is right. I’m not saying that is good, it’s terrible. No one should be doxxed, no one’s families should be brought into their work. But I am saying there are beat officers in this country, in every city in America who are doing their jobs in extremely dangerous situations. That’s a risk you take when you take on this responsibility of having law enforcement power in this country because the accountability is between you and the people.”

Jennings pushed back strongly, stating, “Well A., I don’t agree that law enforcement officers in any agency should face the risk of their family being assaulted or themselves. And B., of course, there should be accountability, and I agree with you about the relationship between policing agencies and the community. Unfortunately in this case, certain people in the community have decided to take matters in their own hands.”

He also pointed to rhetoric from some lawmakers as contributing to the problem.

“I heard a clip today of a Congressman, John Larson from Minnesota, screaming into a microphone, ‘This is Nazi Germany! They are the Gestapo!’ What do you think that does to radicalize people?” Jennings asked.

The exchange underscored growing tensions over immigration enforcement under President Trump’s administration, as ICE agents continue to face an escalating wave of threats and assaults while carrying out federal law.
