President Donald Trump has already done enough to be considered the most pro-gun president in living memory. There’s still a lot more we can ask of him, granted, but he’s done more than anyone before him as it stands right now. This is good, though there’s no reason for any of us to accept it as enough.

But in the wake of Minneapolis and a host of other massacres at various schools throughout the years, President Trump offered his support for at least some teachers being armed.

🚨BREAKING: President Trump says that select school teachers should be ARMED to deter crazed people from doing things like what happened last week in MN!

I absolutely agree!

This is good news.

It’s not great news, because he wants to limit the teachers who can be armed just to those who served in the military and had a distinguished service while there, but it’s definitely a step forward.

His reasoning is that these men and women know weapons, know how to fight, and have seen the elephant enough to react appropriately under pressure.

It’s not bad reasoning, either.

Nor is his reasoning for not outright trusting other teachers. Honestly, considering some of what I’ve seen about the educational system in this country, I absolutely understand where he’s coming from.

I don’t agree with it, though. While there are terrible teachers out there, unless they’ve been convicted of something, their right to keep and bear arms shouldn’t end at school property. There are many who never served in the military, some of whom couldn’t serve for various reasons, who are more than willing to put their lives on the line to protect their students.

Even if they’re not, many would at least like to protect themselves. That would, by extension, protect students.

With that said, I’ll take what I can get, and I think what Trump promoted in that video is an easier sell to the American public. Veterans are more likely to be trusted with a gun than a regular staff member, especially one with a proven combat record.

Of course, it’s also far more likely that a would-be shooter would know who to take out first, but that might also end up being easier said than done.

Many states do allow armed staff, and have extensive training classes for them so they can learn to respond to a number of different scenarios. Yet there’s nothing nationwide, and if Trump can rally Republicans and maybe sway a couple of Democrats in the Senate, this could get done. It would also force anti-gun lawmakers to take an anti-veteran position. Do that right before the midterms, and things could be spicy for some in vulnerable seats.

So no, this isn’t ideal, but I think it’s workable, and it’s far better than doing nothing at all. I don’t know that it would have done anything for Minneapolis, but it might do just enough to stop school shootings like this from continuing as some kind of trend for the mentally broken to achieve some degree of fame while venting their rage.
