The Chicago Sky will be without forward Angel Reese in their Friday night matchup against the Indiana Fever after the WNBA suspended her for picking up her eighth technical foul of the season, as reported by TMZ.

The league announced the suspension on Thursday, citing its rule that an automatic one-game ban is issued once a player or coach accumulates eight technical fouls during the regular season. Reese leads the WNBA in that category.

The incident that triggered the suspension occurred Tuesday during the Sky’s game against the Connecticut Sun.

Reese struck Aaliyah Edwards in the head while battling for a rebound, leading referees to call the technical. League officials reviewed the play but ultimately chose to uphold the decision.

The suspension adds to a difficult week for the 23-year-old second-year player. Reese recently apologized to her teammates and the organization after comments she made in an interview appeared to criticize them in the midst of the team’s 11-30 record.

“I think the language is taken out of context,” Reese said. “I really didn’t intentionally mean to put down my teammates, because they’ve been through this with me throughout the whole year. They’ve busted their ass just how I busted my ass.”

She added, “I want to apologize to my teammates, which I already have about the article and how it was misconstrued about what was said, and I just have to be better with my language, because I know, it’s not the message, it’s the messenger.”

The suspension rules Reese out for the Sky’s upcoming contest against rookie star Caitlin Clark and the Fever. She will be eligible to return for Chicago’s next game on September 7 when the Sky travel to Las Vegas to play the Aces.

The Sky, struggling near the bottom of the league standings, will have to adjust without Reese, who has been a central figure on and off the court throughout the season.
