One person was killed and two others critically injured after a shooting Wednesday afternoon at Evergreen High School, located about 28 miles southwest of Denver, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the gunman opened fire just after noon local time, sending students and staff fleeing for cover.

Jacki Kelley, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, confirmed that three individuals were transported to area hospitals, including the suspect.

A fourth juvenile who does not attend Evergreen High School was also hospitalized.

Local media outlets reported that the suspected gunman was a student at the school.

Authorities said the individual was also injured during the incident, though it was not immediately clear whether the injuries were caused by gunfire or another factor.

Kelley emphasized that law enforcement officers did not discharge their weapons during the response.

Students described the chaos as the shots rang out. Ninth grader Cameron Jones told Colorado Public Radio that he was eating lunch outside when he heard three gunshots.

“Absolutely not,” he said when asked if he thought such violence could happen in his community.

“I thought this was like a one-in-a-million thing, and it still feels surreal that it happened.”

Jones said a security guard urged him to run immediately after the gunfire began.

Parents rushed to a nearby elementary school designated as a reunification site.

Jen Weber, whose son is a freshman, said she was washing her car when she received a text message from him warning that a shooting was unfolding.

Wendy Nueman, another parent, said her 15-year-old daughter initially did not answer her phone.

She later returned the call using a borrowed phone.

“She just said she was OK. She couldn’t hardly speak,” Nueman told The Denver Post.

Nueman said her daughter had run from the school. “It’s super scary. We feel like we live in a little bubble here. Obviously, no one is immune.”

During an afternoon press conference, Kelley confirmed that the weapon used in the attack was a handgun.

She said the shooting appeared to have taken place on school property, but possibly just outside the main building.

“We have a lot of kids that heard it, saw it, indicated that they were shot at, so we have a lot of interviews to do,” Kelley said.

She added that the suspect was so young she was uncertain whether the individual was old enough to drive.

Photos released from the scene showed officers in bulletproof vests running toward the school as multiple emergency vehicles lined nearby streets.

Authorities later announced that “parent-student reunification” had begun, signaling the situation was under control and that there was no ongoing threat.

Governor Jared Polis confirmed he was monitoring the situation closely.

“I am closely monitoring the situation at Evergreen High School, and am getting live updates,” Polis wrote on X.

“State Troopers are supporting local law enforcement in responding to this situation. Students should be able to attend school safely and without fear across our state and nation. We are all praying for the victims and the entire community.”

Colorado’s U.S. senators also responded. Senator John Hickenlooper wrote on X that his office was “closely monitoring the shooting at Evergreen High School” and expressed gratitude for law enforcement’s response.

“Our hearts are with the students, teachers, and families affected. Violence has no place in our communities,” he said.

Evergreen High School serves about 900 students in grades nine through 12.

The school is located in Evergreen, a community in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains southwest of Denver.

The investigation into the shooting remains active as law enforcement continues to gather details and interview witnesses.
