I don’t think I’m going to be done processing Charlie Kirk’s assassination anytime soon. It was beyond horrible, and this was a guy whose gig was talking ideas. He debated with people. He rallied people. He did precisely what the Founding Fathers envisioned people doing in order to create change in this country.

He used the tools of the First Amendment, precisely as intended, and he was killed for it.

As someone who is in the idea business, too, and uses the First Amendment as well, it’s kind of hard not to feel it viscerally.

Seeing people celebrate it is terrible, and it’s disturbing that there are so many of them.

Then we have those like this writer at The Daily Kos who seems to think the only rational response is to ignore everything we believe when it comes to guns.

Conservatives have come up with a host of measures they want taken to avenge right-wing activist Charlie Kirk’s murder—none of which include gun reforms.

…

Still, the haunting video of Kirk’s life being taken by a bullet was not enough for Republicans to finally admit that guns are the problem. Perhaps that’s because Kirk himself wouldn’t want gun reform. In fact, in 2023 Kirk said that “some gun deaths” are worth it “so that we can have the Second Amendment.”

Apparently, however, Republicans don’t hold the First Amendment as sacrosanct, as they want to be the thought police in the wake of Kirk’s death.

First, let me just say that many of those being fired for being ghoulish pariahs are the same people who celebrated cancel culture for years, telling folks that there was no freedom from consequences for speech. They destroyed people for relatively mainstream positions and often folks who weren’t in positions where their opinions were likely to impact the lives of others.

Nurses and doctors celebrating the murder of a man are troubling because there’s no reason to believe they would work just as hard to save the life of a conservative as they would a liberal, should they be aware of the patient’s politics in some way. Teachers celebrating it are more likely to negatively impact conservative students or the children of conservative parents because of their bias.

So there’s a difference between that and getting someone fired because they’re pro-life.

Second, let’s talk about how Republicans won’t “finally admit that guns are the problem.”

To admit something is to know deep down that a given piece of information is true, and to have suppressed that knowledge in some way. Admitting to having done something wrong, for example. You knew the whole time you did. You just didn’t say it.

Republicans aren’t “admitting” that guns are the problem because most of them don’t believe that guns are the problem.

See, people like the author, Emily Singer, labor under this demented opinion that everyone agrees with her on everything, and the only reason some aren’t doing precisely what she thinks they should do is because of evil entities like the NRA, the firearm industry, or whatever other boogieman she concocts in her brain.

But what she doesn’t get is that no one on this side of the debate believes for one minute that guns are the issue. We know that because of facts like how our non-gun homicide rate is also higher than many developed nations’ total homicide rate. We know because we have more guns than people, yet our homicide rate, while still way too high, has no relationship to gun ownership numbers.

Pro-gun voices won’t admit to any such thing because it’s absolute nonsense that people like Singer like to peddle because, ultimately, they’re terrified of our ability to defend ourselves. They don’t like the idea of anyone ever being able to oppose them, even as thousands of people on the left are celebrating a murder.

“Give us your guns so we can celebrate your murder, too,” is a hell of a take.

Editor’s Note: The radical left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights.
