Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin strongly criticized Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas on Monday after the Democrat compared U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to slave patrols during a media appearance last week.

Crockett made the remarks on MSNBC, drawing immediate pushback from federal officials who said her comments endangered the lives of law enforcement officers tasked with removing criminal illegal aliens from U.S. communities.

During an interview on Fox News’ America Reports, co-host Sandra Smith asked McLaughlin about the rhetoric being directed at ICE.

“You’ve got Democrats out there so publicly in what is a very heated moment of hot rhetoric that is out there. What’s going to give to get Democrats to stop vilifying these ICE agents and putting their lives and their families’ lives in danger every day?” Smith asked.

McLaughlin responded by citing arrest data and the role ICE plays in removing violent offenders.

“Exactly. We need to stick with the facts. 70 percent of those illegal aliens who have been arrested under this administration have either prior criminal convictions or pending criminal charges against them,” McLaughlin said.

She noted that recent operations had taken dangerous individuals off the streets.

“Just over the weekend, as Alexis mentioned, we have arrested multiple child pedophiles, multiple rapists, really the worst of the worst on America’s streets,” McLaughlin added.

McLaughlin called on state and local leaders to support federal enforcement rather than attack it.

“J.B. Pritzker, Brandon Johnson, who’s the mayor out of Chicago, they should actually be thanking our ICE law enforcement officers and helping us get these criminal illegal aliens off the ground. Instead, they continue to demonize our law enforcement officers,” she said.

President Donald Trump has also highlighted the challenges facing ICE agents in cities that have resisted enforcement efforts.

In an August 25 post on Truth Social, Trump hinted at increased federal operations in Chicago.

On September 6, he followed up with a meme referencing the 1979 film Apocalypse Now, including the line “I love the smell of deportations in the morning.”

Resistance to ICE activity has at times escalated into violence.

In July, a suspect opened fire on ICE agents during a raid on two marijuana farms in California.

McLaughlin said Crockett’s comparison risked fueling further hostility.

“I think what really this is, when you continue to liken ICE to the Gestapo, to the Nazis, what Jasmine Crockett just did with likening them to slave patrols, they are dehumanizing our officers, and are giving OK to radical activists — they’re really giving them the permission slip to use violence against them,” McLaughlin said.

“And it’s wrong, it’s disgusting and it has to stop now.”

The comments highlight ongoing tensions between federal enforcement officials and Democratic leaders who have opposed or criticized ICE operations in major cities.

Federal officials maintain that their mission is focused on apprehending and removing individuals with criminal records who pose risks to public safety.
