Ex-Atlanta Cop Accused of Being Reason No One Should Just Rely on 911

Anti-gunners throughout the nation want you to give up your guns and trust the police to protect you. Never mind that they’re not legally required to do so, that there’s no “duty to protect” as multiple courts have ruled through the years. That’s enough reason not to put all of your trust in dialing 911.

But recently, a situation in Atlanta was a horrifying glimpse at another reason you shouldn’t put your trust in calling the police.

Sometimes, the problem actually is a police officer.

The ex-Atlanta police officer accused of raping a massage therapist was on-duty at the time, and later returned to the scene after she called 911, even jumping in the ambulance with her, an investigator testified on Monday.

Fulton County Magistrate Judge Todd Ashley ruled there was enough evidence for the case to proceed, but not before questioning the victim’s credibility, saying that former officer Muhammad Muhammad’s defense team had raised doubts about whether the encounter had been consensual.

Atlanta Detective Anthony Blair told the judge that Muhammad was on duty when he allegedly forced himself on the massage therapist during an appointment at the now-fired officer’s mostly empty apartment.

The lead investigator also said when the woman called 911 from the parking lot that night, Muhammad heard the dispatch over the radio and promptly returned to the scene. The officer’s body cam footage whoed he even got into the ambulance with his alleged victim, Blair testified, causing the woman to become visibly distraught.

For the record, she apparently screamed out “Rapist!” at seeing Muhammad.

Now, before I continue, I want to be perfectly clear. This isn’t what most cops do. If Muhammad actually raped this woman, he’s part of an extraordinarily small percentage of police officers who would do any such thing. The vast majority would never think of something like this, even a lot of the dirty ones. There are lines that only the most vile cross, and Muhammad is accused of being such a person.

However, a tiny percentage is still enough for all of us to be troubled by what Muhammad is accused of doing to this woman. 

Police officers are human. They’re not machines, programmed to do the bidding of whatever governmental body signs their checks. They’re people who range the entirety of humanity. Some are outstanding people whom everyone should consider emulating. Others are nothing more than good examples of what not to be in life. The majority are somewhere in between, with most ending closer to the former, rather than the latter.

But they’re still people, which means we’re being told to trust human beings we don’t necessarily know to protect us and our family, rather than doing so ourselves. They ignore the fact that there’s a non-zero chance that the person who responds might be worse than the person who prompted the call in the first place.

I’m sorry, but I’d rather not trust my wife’s and daughter’s safety to a phone call, where there’s not even a guarantee they’d show up in time anyway. I’d rather trust our God-given right to keep and bear arms. At least then, we can protect ourselves from all the monsters.
