‘PERSON 1’ in the James Comey Indictment Revealed by Investigative Reporter

The fallout from the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey continued Friday as new details emerged identifying key individuals referenced in the Justice Department’s filing.

According to ABC News, “PERSON 1” in the indictment is former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and “PERSON 3” is Daniel Richman, a longtime friend and former personal lawyer to Comey.

The indictment accuses Comey of lying under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Specifically, Count 1 states that Comey “willfully and knowingly” made false statements in September 2020 when he reaffirmed earlier testimony that he had never “authorized someone else at the FBI to be an anonymous source in news reports” regarding an investigation linked to “PERSON 1.”

Prosecutors allege that Comey in fact directed Richman to act as an anonymous source to the media concerning the FBI’s investigation.

“That statement was false, because, as JAMES B. COMEY JR. then and there knew, he in fact had authorized PERSON 3 to serve as an anonymous source in news reports regarding [the] FBI investigation,” the indictment reads.

ABC News senior investigative reporter Mike Levine reported Friday evening that his sources confirmed the identities of the two individuals.

Levine noted in a post on X that Richman’s role was pivotal in funneling information to the press about matters connected to Hillary Clinton.

Levine highlighted additional details, pointing to an FBI report from September 2021 that described Richman’s activities.

The Justice Department is still offering few details about their case against former FBI director James Comey, but @ABC News has learned that Count 1 of the indictment, charging Comey with making false statements, focuses on his alleged role in having his close friend and former…

According to the report, “Richman contacted journalists to correct stories critical of Comey, the FBI and to shape future press coverage. Richman did this both when he was an SGE and after he resigned from the FBI.”

The Justice Department is pursuing the case on the grounds that Comey deliberately misled lawmakers under oath.

Prosecutors claim that his coordination with Richman shows he not only allowed but encouraged outside channels to serve as conduits for sensitive information.

Comey, who led the FBI from 2013 until his dismissal in 2017, has been at the center of political and legal controversies for years.

His handling of the Clinton email investigation during the 2016 presidential election, his role in authorizing the Crossfire Hurricane probe into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, and his subsequent public disputes with President Trump have kept him in the political spotlight.

The indictment adds to those controversies, bringing criminal charges tied to his sworn testimony before Congress.

Federal prosecutors are alleging a pattern of dishonesty in Comey’s efforts to shape media narratives, with Richman acting as his intermediary.

Richman, a Columbia Law School professor, was frequently described as a close confidant of Comey.

During earlier investigations, Richman admitted to being the recipient of Comey’s memos about private conversations with President Trump, which he later provided to the press.

The newly-released FBI documents say that while “Comey instructed the FBI to hire Richman as a Special Government Employee” — with “a Top Secret clearance” — to work on “Going Dark” matters, “Comey also used Richman as a liaison to the media.”

“Richman contacted journalists to…

Those disclosures played a role in the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller in 2017.

The inclusion of Hillary Clinton in the indictment as “PERSON 1” further ties the case to longstanding debates over the FBI’s handling of the Clinton investigations.

The DOJ’s filing makes clear that Comey’s misrepresentation to the Senate was directly connected to matters involving Clinton.

Comey responded to the indictment with a video statement:

Both Richman and Clinton have also declined comment.

The case, which is expected to proceed in federal court, has already reignited debate in Washington about the accountability of senior law enforcement officials.

As proceedings move forward, the indictment signals that prosecutors are prepared to challenge the credibility of a former FBI director whose actions had sweeping political consequences.

With Clinton and Richman now directly identified in the case, the legal and political stakes are expected to intensify.
