Colbert Pushing More Gun Control for Long Guns, Wonders Why He’s About to Be Out of Work

Stephen Colbert was actually pretty funny on The Daily Show. Once he got his own gig, though, the funny ended. It seems he’s only amusing in small doses, which is fine. A lot of people can’t even manage that.

His show is going to be over after this season, something many on the political left can’t seem to understand, but the truth is that the show just isn’t doing all that well.

And, of course, there’s the intense bias we see from late-night television. 

Even Jimmy Fallon, who isn’t quite as overt as his network late-night colleagues, typically only has Democrats on as guests, compared to Republicans. That’s bias in and of itself.

Colbert was just more overt than most, with the possible exception of Jimmy Kimmel.

And recently, he had Sen. Chris Murphy on, and boy was it proof he should be out of work:

And as you know, and I think most of the people out here know, today there was another tragic shooting, this time at an ICE facility down in Dallas. We don’t know a lot about it so far. What goes through your mind when you hear about another shooting like this?”

Murphy says we shouldn’t politicize violence and then politicizes violence, “it just sickens me that we have a president who instead of trying to stand up and say wherever the violence comes from, it’s unacceptable, is politicizing this moment. It’s about the victims and it’s about a mourning of a loss of a potential moment to bring this country together. ” 

As does Colbert, “I mean, there really hasn’t been much movement to rein in the access to the long guns and many of the weapons used in these killings, but, I mean, hopefully, maybe there could be a political sea change in the United States.”

The ICE shooting used a bolt-action Mauser milsurp chambered in 8mm Mauser. It’s the very kind of gun that we’re told over and over again no one wants to restrict. It doesn’t have a “high capacity magazine,” a detachable magazine, it’s not semi-automatic, it has none of the “evil features” of a so-called assault weapon. 

Yes, it was a weapon of war at one time, but its place on the battlefield is long in the past.

So please, Mr. Colbert, do tell me just what restrictions you’d propose to stop people from getting guns that last saw military relevance in a conflict that also served as the debut for the atomic bomb. I’d absolutely love to hear your nuanced opinion on a subject you have no actual understanding of.

Like so many other late-night hosts, Colbert forgot that he was supposed to just be funny.

There’s a reason he needs to brush up that resume.
