For decades, we’ve been told that gun control wasn’t about banning guns. They didn’t want to interfere with our hunting, with our way of outdoor life. They just wanted some “common sense” restrictions on dangerous weapons that weren’t useful for hunting and things like that.

And far too many outdoorsmen and women bought it. They didn’t care about those newfangled AR-15s and whatnot. All they needed was their trusty bolt-action .30-06 and a tree stand to be perfectly happy in life. No one wanted to touch those, after all.

But last week, Sen. Chris Murphy sat down with outgoing late-night host Stephen Colbert and gave up the game entirely.

Despite the assailant’s use of a bolt-action hunting rifle similar to those owned by millions of American hunters, Murphy and Colbert used the tragedy to advocate for broader restrictions on what Colbert termed as “long guns.”

During their televised conversation, Murphy stated:

We are obviously amidst a moment with an increase in political violence and it just shouldn’t matter. It shouldn’t matter whether the radicalization comes from the right or the left or some non-ideological place in the deep, dark recesses of the internet. This president, our entire political process, could make a decision to draw a line in the sand.

Colbert then responded:

There really hasn’t been much movement to reign in the access to the long guns and many of the weapons that are used in these killings. But I mean, hopefully maybe there could be a political sea change in the United States.

Gun Owners of America immediately seized on this exchange, posting:

We’re not surprised. It’s pretty clear anti-gunners aren’t just coming for AR15s—they want basic hunting rifles too. They want to talk about a ‘line in the sand,’ but we’re past ours. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.

“Long guns” is a broad category, and as the Dallas attack used a bolt-action, just as Charlie Kirk’s assassin did, we know good and well that Colbert was talking about those as well as the dreaded “assault weapons.” Murphy said nothing to suggest that he disagreed with the broad brush approach, either, which is hardly surprising.

That was really just the latest example.

Last week, The Trace–a Bloomberg-funded anti-gun organization of “journalists”–wrote about how difficult it is to prevent so-called sniper attacks. We’ve long argued that the attack on hunting rifles could start with calling them something like “sniper rifles,” and yes, this is likely the first step toward something like that.

There’s been absolutely no effort to differentiate between those guns typically used for sporting purposes versus those deemed as having no such use, in part because that’s never really been what it’s about.

All guns are, in their minds, a danger. There is a hierarchy of which are worse, but all guns fall on that spectrum, and they’re all targets of the gun control organizations.

Those who favored restrictions, thinking their beloved firearms weren’t on the menu, were lied to. They were told those guns were fine, that they were the good kind of gun owners because they were open to “commonsense gun safety legislation,” while the rest of us weren’t.

But we saw the truth. We knew that it would never stop. Once the camel’s nose is under the tent, soon the rest of the camel joins it. We saw it.

And we tried to warn those we call Fudds. Granted, the term probably didn’t help us reach them, but the point is that we really did try to warn them that they weren’t safe. The plan, such as there was one, didn’t call for them to come onto the chopping block this soon, but a couple of shooters changed the script.

For those outdoors types who value their guns, even if they don’t value the totality of our gun rights, this should serve as the wake-up call you’ve long needed. You either protect all of our gun rights or you will eventually lose those that matter to you.

Editor’s Note: The radical left will stop at nothing to enact their radical gun control agenda and strip us of our Second Amendment rights. All of them.
