Former President Barack Obama is pushing back against President Trump after Trump cited research cautioning pregnant women about taking Tylenol, sparking controversy and online reaction, as reported by The Blaze.

President Trump recently pointed to findings from a Harvard study warning that acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, could endanger unborn children when taken by pregnant women.

Following his remarks, some liberal social media users responded by posting videos of themselves taking the medication in defiance.

Obama criticized Trump in a speech following the announcement, saying the President’s statements undermined public health.

“So we have the spectacle of my successor, in the Oval Office, making broad claims around certain drugs and autism that have been continuously disproved. And the degree to which that undermines public health to the degree to which that can do harm to women who are pregnant,” Obama said.

He went on to address autism in his remarks, stating, “For parents who do have children who are autistic, which by the way itself is subject to a spectrum and a lot of what is being trumpeted as these massive increases actually have to do with a broadening of the criteria across that spectrum so that people can actually get services and help.”

Obama added, “All of that is a violence against the truth.”

The exchange drew attention from commentators, including BlazeTV host Pat Gray, who questioned the former president’s statements during his show “Pat Gray Unleashed.”

Gray remarked, “I’d love to see Trump say pregnant women shouldn’t drink alcohol and watch them deny that.” After playing Obama’s comments, Gray added, “Wow, did you hear the violence? Did you hear the violence against the truth?”

While Obama disputed Trump’s warnings, medical research had previously raised concerns about acetaminophen use during pregnancy. In October 2020, Canada’s CBC reported on a study published in the scientific journal Nature that cautioned against acetaminophen use by pregnant women.

“Medical health experts have released an important statement on pregnancy and pain medication. It’s part of a study in the British Scientific Journal Nature, and here’s what it does,” CBC reported at the time.

“It cautions pregnant women about using acetaminophen, and that is the active ingredient in Tylenol and many other medications that so many of us use to relieve pain or fever,” CBC’s Christine Birak said.

She noted that the statement was backed by nearly 100 scientists and doctors worldwide.

“They insist a higher level of caution is needed when pregnant people use fever and pain meds that contain acetaminophen, including Tylenol. The authors don’t have any new evidence showing the drug harms a developing fetus,” she added.

Birak further explained, “But their statement does say a growing body of experimental and epidemiological research suggests that prenatal exposure to acetaminophen might alter fetal development, which could in turn increase the risks of certain neurodevelopmental, reproductive, and urogenital disorders.”

The debate over acetaminophen’s safety during pregnancy continues to spark controversy, with Trump highlighting research urging caution and Obama dismissing his warnings as harmful to public health.
