Do You Hear Laughter, Democrats?

In 1956’s The Ten Commandments, after Yul Brynner’s Pharoah released the Hebrew slaves from bondage, his Queen, Nefretiri, played by Anne Baxter, was bitter at losing her son in the final plague God brought on Egypt during the first Passover. She uttered the question, dripping with condescension, “Do you hear laughter, Pharoah?” The same laughter of mocking and derision is cascading down on Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and the rest of the Congressional and Senate Democrats in the wake of the Schumer shutdown, now entering Day 2. 

If there has to be a government shutdown, October is as good a month as any for it to happen, especially when caused by the Democrats, because it’s a perfect lead-in for Halloween. Schumer and the Democrats are leading a zombie shutdown. Schumer’s debacle is already a dead shutdown walking. 

The first vote, the last chance for Democrats before the shutdown went into effect Tuesday night at Midnight, didn’t just reveal one defection for the left, there were three. Joining John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, who has no desire to drive off the cliff for nothing, was Angus King of Maine, who claims independent status but conferences with Democrats, and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada. Typically, whichever side is trying to pull a stunt, whether it be a filibuster or a shutdown, they eventually break down in their numbers. The line almost always breaks down at some point, but they at least start on the first day locked in solidarity. This shutdown was not even that united. 

At the White House Press Briefing room Wednesday, Vice-President J.D. Vance joined Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and dominated media coverage. Every cable news outlet and major network heard Vance clearly outline what the shutdown is for and who caused it, and why the terms of it are ridiculous and a non-starter. 





No notes, no gimmicks, just clear articulation on why the Democrats’ are being so unreasonable, and calling out their lie that is has nothing to do with enhanced Obamacare coverage for illegal aliens. It is the Democrats that are lying, and you only need to read their own legislation to prove it. Immediately following the briefing, the White House released the text of the Democrats’ version of the bill they want substituted. It would reverse out the elimination of funding and reimbursement for care of illegal migrants that passed as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill.  

Republicans have been remarkably and uncharacteristically crystal clear and united on their messaging. It often helps when they have facts, reality and truth on their side. It tends to galvanize how to frame the shutdown. Democrats, conversely, are all over the place. Whether it’s Ro Khanna admitting yes, illegals’ healthcare are in there, but it’s a teeny tiny itty bit, or Maxine Waters getting flustered and saying we’re covering everybody, they’re not all singing from the same hymnal. They seemed to think the media environment and influence is exactly as it was in 2013 when Republicans shut down the government. They believed any shutdown would be blamed on Republicans, and allies in the press would make it stick. The media isn’t like that anymore, especially with social media and podcasts joining with conservative talk radio and several right-of-center TV news outlets joining the mix. 

Tuesday afternoon on the Senate floor, Schumer tried to preemptively bring up a New York Times/Siena poll that didn’t look too good for his side. 





Schumer responded with this. 

Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York, just said, “The New York Times poll is biased.” Immediately, Republican Senators in the chamber erupted in laughter. It was spontaneous and loud enough that Schumer heard it, and it surprised him enough to interrupt his train of thought. And then it dawned on him why they were laughing. He realized they were laughing at him, not with him. He tried to make light of it, laughing it off himself, which is a pretty horrible look for someone single-handedly responsible for the entire United States Military not receiving a paycheck for a while. 

Schumer knows this entire debacle is a joke. You can tell his heart isn’t in the argument he’s making. But his desire for six more years representing the Empire State in the United States is what’s driving the current course of events, not rationality and logic. 

Do you hear laughter, Senator?

You can best believe that other Senators on the Democratic side heard the laughter at their leader. During Wednesday’s re-do vote, which will be held daily until five more Democrats inevitably cave, a very interesting picture was captured. 

Democrats are only on the first day of their shutdown siege against American government, and there’s eight Democrats huddled on their side of the aisle holding a little sidebar convo with Republicans John Cornyn of Texas and Mike Rounds of North Dakota? Schumer lost three Democrats before the shutdown even began, and now there’s eight more in his conference nervous enough to try to negotiate their way off this limb they find themselves behind his back? 

This is a fascinating screenshot, because in that huddle is the Senate Democrats’ number two, Dick Durbin. In any other year or political fight, you’d think he’s representing Schumer and the conference. I’m not sure that’s the case this time. Durbin announced his retirement from the Senate at the end of his current term a few months ago. He’s not making decisions based on his political future like he has done so many times in the past. He knows this is nonsense and is trying to save the party from itself before further damage occurs. Joining Durbin is Gary Peters of Michigan, who also is hanging it up at the end of his term in 2026. When several people in this huddle have no future skin in the game and are talking to Republicans about how to get out from under this, Schumer’s in real trouble keeping the shutdown going.

Back to the growing chorus of laughter at Democrats. At the White House Briefing with V.P. Vance, a reporter brought up the sombrero videos Donald Trump has been posting to his social media accounts the last few days. They’re pretty funny, albeit unorthodox rhetoric from prior presidencies. Some of these video clips are definitely not safe for work.

Naturally, Jeffries and Schumer threw a tizzy, thinking their outrage would raise the stakes. All it did was draw more attention to the mocking of them. Which begat this Wednesday morning. 

Schumer went on the Senate floor hours later, still bellyaching about being made fun of. Jeffries was righteously indignant, without the benefit of being righteous in combination of being born tragically without a sense of humor. 

At the White House briefing with Vance, a reporter asked the obligatory question about the appropriateness of the sombrero meme. The Vice-President was laying in wait, and delivered the knockout blow. 

In short, the sombreros will continue until morale improves. Notice, though, what happened after Vance delivered the punchline. The press corps broke into laughter. Laughing with a Republican and at a Democrat. Even the press corps knows what a joke this Schumer shutdown is, and they’re kind of enjoying it as well. 

Another reporter circled around to the sombrero and mustache videos, and the Vice-President showed he still had more gas in the tank. 





Vance teased media for feeling obligated to alert their audience that the cartoon curly mustache was AI-generated. Vance was signaling to the American people that media thinks you’re stupid, but the Trump administration understands that Americans know a good joke when they see and hear one. It’s too bad late night television “comedians” these days haven’t figured that part out. But again, after Vance finished, what did the lefty bubble press corps in the briefing room do? They laughed again. When’s the last time you heard the Resistance media do that, let alone twice?  

Do you hear laughter, Hakeem? 

I had almost forgotten this until my friend Mark Reardon, afternoon drive talker at 97.1FM, KFTK in St. Louis, reminded me of a clip of Chuck Schumer on CNN’s morning show with John Berman Wednesday. 

Even Berman cracked a joke at Schumer’s expense. Now the Minority Leader could not hear the joke at the time, but it wasn’t very long until the drive-by Berman delivered to cover the audio difficulty made its way back to the Senate, resulting in more snickering and laughter. 

Do you hear laughter, Senator Democrats? 

Ted Cruz got into the act by Wednesday night, helping to identify the remaining 44 Senate Democrats, for now, standing with Schumer to hold the country’s government hostage until more than a trillion is restored to either directly or indirectly cover and/or reimburse the healthcare costs of illegal aliens in the United States. 





Lots of other people are taking part of the fun, too. 

The biggest loser, besides Schumer and Jeffries? This lady, who all of a sudden isn’t getting enough screen time to sell a pitiful book about a sad chapter in American politics. 

Why are the Democrats so upset? Because the meme is sticking. They’re not even two full days into this stunt, and they’re the butt of jokes all over the internet, and it’s breaking out into cable news. The Democratic Party can be stubborn, but if they’re understood to be a laughing stock, that may be too big a lift for even partisan lefty senators to take on. 

Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought has promised a ton of permanent firings of non-essential federal employees, or RIF’s (reductions in force). Now that there’s no Congressional statute in place governing who can and cannot be fired, there is nothing legally in the way for Vought to drain the Swamp once and for all, essentially overnight. But Vought needs to move with dispatch. The Senate’s next vote to end the shutdown is Friday. At this rate, with all the laughter at them, not with them, the chances of more Democrats caving grow stronger. The window Vought enjoys right now may already be closing. He better not dillydally around with the pink slips. 

Time to make it rain. 

As a warmup, Vought essentially cancelled the Green New Deal from Biden’s last big spending bill. 

Democrats are shocked, shocked to find out that Russ Vought is going to follow through with what Donald Trump promised. If you shut the government down, you’re turning the keys over to OMB, and to this guy to decide who stays and who goes, permanently.





Finally, in a desperate attempt to stay relevant and try to hold a mirror up to Republicans, California Governor Gavin Newsom’s press office came up with this. 

Oh, there is laughter in response to this, but probably not the kind of laughter Newsom or his team envisioned. It’s cringeworthy bad. So much so, in fact, that people on the right are using it in order to laugh at Gavin Newsom trying to out-Trump Donald Trump, which is a fool’s errand. 

Do you hear laughter, Gavin?
