“If we restrict guns, we’re not going to have to worry about any of these awful tragedies.”

Someone says that after literally every single high-profile shooting, regardless of any other factor involved in the incident. It’s a simple solution “thought up” by simple people. They don’t know the topic, don’t care to actually learn, so they just parrot what someone told them once before and act like they’ve come up with something profound.

People like David Hogg have figured out how to make a career doing that kind of thing.

However, I came across a story of something that, while not a brutal series of murders, sure reminds me of an old horror movie trope.

The incident happened Sunday, Sept. 28, shortly after 10:15 p.m. in the 9700 block of Church Way, according to Fairfax County Police.

A caller reported a man in crisis was destroying property inside a house with a chainsaw and an ax, police said. Officers arrived and found him outside acting erratically and drinking booze.

Crisis Intervention Team officers tried to negotiate with him for nearly an hour, police said.

At one point, the man retreated into his garage, grabbed a portable propane hand torch, and then pulled out a firearm. He racked the slide, tucked it into his waistband, and ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon.

Police said two less-than-lethal bean bag rounds were fired. Moments later, a 6-year veteran officer discharged her firearm, striking the man in the lower body.

The man apparently survived, and the incident is being investigated, but while this revolved around a firearm, I can’t help but think about the tool that started the whole thing: A chainsaw.

Maybe Texas Chainsaw Massacre played a bigger role in my psyche than I might have thought, but that sounds like a more awful instrument to use to hurt people than a gun. People are scared of being stabbed by a knife more often than they’re afraid of being shot, from what I’ve found, but a chainsaw is even more terrifying.

I’m not super comfortable even using one, which is probably a good thing since it means I’m more likely to be careful.

Yet if this guy had a chainsaw, and he intended to hurt someone, how much damage could he have done with it before anyone could have stopped him, unless they had a firearm themselves? Just shutting the door isn’t a guarantee of safety since, hello? Chainsaw. It’ll cut through a door easily enough since it’s made for cutting down entire trees.

“Tom, you’re just engaging in hypotheticals.”

Yes, I am. I saw this, and it made me wonder. It caused me to ponder a world where the anti-gunners get their fondest wish and we’re all restricted from having guns in pretty much every way. I wondered just how many ways that idea would be proven to be stupid, and a crazed dude with a chainsaw is one of the more terrifying prospects, to say the least.

And honestly, there are so many other ways someone could hurt people without a gun that it’s not even remotely amusing.
