New York Attorney General Letitia James is facing heavy criticism after being indicted by a federal grand jury in Virginia on charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution.

The indictment, announced Wednesday, quickly drew reactions across social media as many conservatives resurfaced her past posts directed at then-presidential candidate Donald Trump.

In February 2024, just days before Trump was barred from operating his business in New York for three years and was ordered to pay more than $350 million in damages following the civil fraud case brought against him, James had written on X, “Roses are red. Violets are blue. No one is above the law. Even when you think the rules don’t apply to you. Happy Valentine’s Day!”

No one is above the law.

Even when you think the rules don’t apply to you.

Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤️

Conservatives circulated the post widely on Thursday, calling attention to what they described as irony given her own indictment.

The civil case against Trump and his company was one that he and his supporters said was politically motivated and aimed at damaging him personally and financially.

Following the announcement of James’s indictment, several prominent conservative figures and commentators posted reactions.

“This aged perfectly,” political commentator Benny Johnson wrote on X.

Another user, Red State contributor Bonchie, said, “If you didn’t complain about this blatant politicization and mocking of the justice system, then please spare me your complaints today.”

Meteorologist Chris Martz posted, “Life comes at you fast,” while former Republican county executive candidate Chrissy Casilio wrote, “Roses are red. Violets are blue. If you commit mortgage fraud, a grand-jury will indict you!”

According to the indictment, James is accused of misrepresenting a property as a second residence rather than an income property in order to obtain more favorable loan terms.

“According to the indictment, Tish James claimed this was a second residence, as opposed to an income property,” Rep. Mike Lawler posted on X.

“If true, then it would seem based on her own tweets, she believes that is a prosecutable offense as it resulted in a more favorable loan.”

Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz reposted one of James’s past comments with his own addition: “I totally agree! No one is above the law!”

GOP Congresswoman Elise Stefanik also weighed in, writing, “No one is above the law and that includes NY’s criminal and failed attorney general Tish James — the most corrupt AG in the nation.”

U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Lindsey Halligan announced that James faces up to 30 years in prison per count, fines of up to $1 million per count, and possible forfeiture if convicted.

“No one is above the law. The charges as alleged in this case represent intentional, criminal acts and tremendous breaches of the public’s trust,” Halligan stated.

“The facts and the law in this case are clear, and we will continue following them to ensure that justice is served.”

In a statement released following her indictment, James denied wrongdoing and said the charges were “part of Trump’s effort to impose political retribution at any cost.”
