Joe Biden is undergoing five weeks of radiation therapy following a prostate cancer diagnosis made earlier this year, according to a statement released by his office and reports from NBC News.

“As part of a treatment plan for prostate cancer, President Biden is currently undergoing radiation therapy and hormone treatment,” a spokesperson for Biden told NBC News on Saturday.

The 82-year-old began hormone therapy prior to the radiation treatments, according to a source familiar with his medical care.

The latest stage of treatment represents a continuation of his broader plan to manage the disease after doctors confirmed that the cancer had spread beyond the prostate.

Biden’s office publicly announced his diagnosis on May 18 in a post on X, stating that he had been found to have an “aggressive form” of prostate cancer that had already metastasized to the bone.

“Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” the statement said.

The post continued, “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

NBC News reported that the diagnosis came after Biden sought medical attention for persistent urinary issues earlier this year.

Medical experts cited by the outlet said the disease’s spread to the bone likely indicated that it had been developing undetected for several years before discovery.

The spokesperson added that Biden is currently “doing well” as his treatment progresses.

This is not the first time Biden has undergone treatment for cancer while in public life.

In September, he had surgery to remove skin cancer from his forehead.

The procedure, known as Mohs surgery, involves the removal of thin layers of skin until no cancerous cells remain.

In 2023, during a routine physical exam conducted while he was in office, physicians removed a cancerous skin lesion.

At that time, his doctor confirmed that no additional treatment was necessary.

Biden’s health has been under increased public scrutiny since leaving office, with several recent reports detailing his ongoing medical procedures and physical therapy regimen.

His personal physician has continued to release limited updates about his condition while maintaining that his current treatment plan is proceeding as expected.

Prostate cancer is among the most common forms of cancer in men, with treatment options typically involving a combination of hormone therapy, radiation, and in some cases, surgery.

The National Cancer Institute classifies a Gleason score of 9 as a Grade Group 5 cancer, indicating an aggressive form of the disease that has a higher likelihood of spreading beyond the prostate.

According to NBC News, the decision to begin radiation therapy followed consultations with oncologists at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

While no official medical briefings have been scheduled, sources told the outlet that Biden has been responding well to the treatment and is continuing to follow his physicians’ recommendations.

Biden’s medical team has not provided an exact completion date for the radiation therapy but indicated that it is expected to last approximately five weeks.

His office said further updates would be shared “as appropriate” once his treatment concludes.
