Coast Guard Security Opens Fire on Suspect Trying to Ram Gate with a U-Haul Truck [WATCH]

Security officers at Coast Guard Base Alameda in California opened fire Thursday night after a driver in a U-Haul truck ignored repeated commands to stop and appeared to attempt to ram the base’s front gate, federal officials said.

The incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. outside the entrance to the base on Coast Guard Island, located in the San Francisco Bay.

Witness video captured by KTVU reporter Henry Lee showed uniformed personnel with firearms drawn, shouting for the driver to stop as the U-Haul truck reversed toward them.

Moments later, gunfire erupted, and the truck was seen speeding away from the gate.

In a statement released Friday morning, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed the sequence of events and described the situation as an apparent attempted vehicular assault.

“Coast Guard security personnel standing watch on Coast Guard Island observed a vehicle driving erratically and attempting to weaponize the vehicle to ram into Coast Guard Base Alameda,” the statement said.

The DHS further explained that officers “issued multiple verbal commands to stop the vehicle. The driver failed to comply and proceeded to put the vehicle in reverse — suddenly accelerating backwards at a high rate of speed directly toward them. When the vehicle’s actions posed a direct threat to the safety of Coast Guard and security personnel, law enforcement officers discharged several rounds of defensive live fire.”

No Coast Guard members were injured in the incident, according to officials.

However, two civilians sustained injuries.

The driver of the U-Haul was struck in the stomach by gunfire and was taken into custody.

DHS said the individual is being held for a mental health evaluation.

A bystander was also injured after being hit by a fragment, treated at a local hospital, and released. Both civilians are expected to survive.

Authorities have not released the name of the driver, and the investigation into the motive is ongoing.

Officials did not confirm whether the suspect was connected to protests that had taken place earlier in the day outside the base.

According to CBS News, the U-Haul truck had been parked near the base for much of the day prior to the shooting.

The location had been the site of a protest where demonstrators blocked access to Coast Guard Island, prompting law enforcement to deploy flash bangs and smoke grenades to disperse the crowd.

At least two individuals were detained during the protest, officials said.

The protests reportedly began after reports surfaced that the Trump administration planned to use the Alameda base as a staging area for Border Patrol agents as part of an immigration enforcement expansion in the Bay Area.

President Donald Trump announced earlier on Thursday that the deployment would not go forward following discussions with San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and several local technology executives.

Despite the announcement, demonstrators remained at the base gate throughout the day and into the evening hours.

The Coast Guard and DHS said additional security measures were implemented at the base following the incident, and federal investigators are reviewing video footage and witness statements.

Local law enforcement agencies are assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Officials said no further threats have been reported in connection with the shooting, and Coast Guard Base Alameda has since resumed normal operations under heightened security.
