Kamala Harris: ‘I Am Not Done’

Kamala Harris: ‘I Am Not Done’

Can you feel the joy? Can you hear the cackle running down the back of your neck?

That’s because Kamala Harris has revealed that she’s not quite done running terrible presidential campaigns. Sure she blew through a billion and a half dollars in a matter of weeks and still lost, but she’s ready to blow through even more Democratic money in 2028.

In the BBC interview Harris entertained the prospect of another run at the White House, saying her grandnieces would, “in their lifetime, for sure”, see a female president.

Asked if it would be her, she said, “possibly”, confirming she is considering another run at the top job.

Harris said she had not yet made a decision, but underlined that she still sees herself as having a future in politics.

“I am not done,” the former vice-president said. “I have lived my entire career as a life of service and it’s in my bones.”

Responding to odds that place her as an outsider to win a place on the Democratic ticket – even behind Hollywood actor Dwayne the Rock Johnson – she said she never listened to polls.

“If I listened to polls I would have not run for my first office, or my second office – and I certainly wouldn’t be sitting here.”

Sorry, but she’s not sitting there because she ignored the polls. She’s sitting there because Joe Biden promised to pick a woman as his running mate and she was the least bad option.

She’s also sitting there because Joe Biden was too addled to know that he was too old to run for reelection. And also because no one around Biden really wanted him to step aside. Why? Partly because they knew Harris would be his only possible replacement because anyone who didn’t line up behind her would be accused of racism.

So instead of Biden stepping aside and allowing an open process (where Harris would surely have lost to other, better candidates), we got Biden’s debate collapse followed by him handing the campaign off to her a few months before the election. That’s why she’s sitting there as the loser of the 2024 election.

She then went on to attack Trump, about the safest possible move in today’s Democratic party.

Harris further argued that her predictions about Trump’s authoritarian tendencies have been proven right: “He said he would weaponize the Department of Justice — and he has done exactly that.”

The former vice president went on to cite the short suspension of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel by ABC after comments about Charlie Kirk’s death. The president celebrated the suspension at the time.

“You look at what has happened in terms of how he has weaponized, for example, federal agencies going around after political satirists. His skin is so thin he couldn’t endure criticism from a joke and attempted to shut down an entire media organization in the process.”

She also attacked companies that have capitulated to Trump. But there’s an awkward asterisk on this one. Her husband works at one of those companies.

She reiterated her criticism of corporations, universities, media companies and law firms that she said had capitulated to Mr. Trump’s demands, citing ABC’s decision to suspend the late night host Jimmy Kimmel over his remarks following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist.

Her husband, Doug Emhoff, is a partner at Willkie Farr & Gallagher, which was one of the first law firms that cut a deal to avoid being sanctioned by the Trump administration. Mr. Emhoff has said he disagreed with the decision by his firm to pledge $100 million in pro bono legal work for causes the president has championed.

My hot take on this is that no one is really very eager for the return of Kamala Harris. And unless something has changed about her entire personality, she’ll be back to word salads and cackling like a lunatic within days of launching her run in 2027. That will very quickly wear thin and she’ll once again fall behind other candidates who are simply better at this.

As for a woman president, it will happen one day but I don’t think that person will be Kamala Harris.
