Gayle King Reportedly Leaving ‘CBS Mornings’ Amid Network-Wide Shakeup, Layoffs

Veteran broadcaster Gayle King is reportedly preparing to leave CBS Mornings next year as the network undergoes major internal changes and widespread layoffs, according to Variety.

Multiple sources told the outlet that King, 70, may transition into another role within CBS, though no final decision has been made. Her current contract is set to expire in May, and insiders said she has not yet confirmed her next career move.

The reports surfaced amid an ongoing restructuring led by CBS News’ new Editor-in-Chief, Bari Weiss. Since Weiss took over, CBS News has seen deep budget reductions, the cancellation of two streaming programs, and the termination of roughly 100 employees across multiple divisions — including eight on-air correspondents and hosts.

In a statement to The New York Post, a CBS spokesperson said, “There have been no discussions with Gayle about her contract that runs through May 2026. She’s a truly valued part of CBS, and we look forward to engaging with her about the future.”

The internal turmoil follows speculation earlier this year that King’s $10 million salary could be targeted as the network moved to cut costs following disappointing ratings for CBS Mornings. “This could be Gayle’s last year,” a media source told The Post in May.

Weiss, 41, reportedly addressed the layoffs in an internal editorial call on Wednesday, telling staff that it was “an enormously difficult day for so many people who have given years of their lives to this company.”

One CBS News employee described the situation as “a bloodbath,” as layoffs reached across multiple departments, including digital, television, and production units.

King has been one of CBS’s most recognizable faces since joining the network in 2011, when the morning program was still titled CBS This Morning. The show was rebranded as CBS Mornings in 2021, with King continuing to co-anchor alongside Nate Burleson and Tony Dokoupil.

According to Variety, King’s departure discussions come as other well-known CBS personalities have also exited the network. Former CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell stepped down from her show earlier this year and now serves as a senior correspondent.

Recent layoffs have also affected high-profile figures such as Late Show host Stephen Colbert, CBS Evening News co-host John Dickerson, and CBS Saturday Morning anchors Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson.

Sources also told Variety that political differences between King and Weiss have created internal tension, though no official comment was provided regarding those claims.

Paramount Global, CBS’s parent company, confirmed earlier this week that cost-cutting measures would continue into 2025, signaling that more changes could still come for the network and its on-air talent.
