Why Trump’s Call to End Filibuster Dangerous to Second Amendment

Why Trump’s Call to End Filibuster Dangerous to Second Amendment

The Schumer Shutdown has been going on for way too long. Of course, most people aren’t really feeling it because so much of the government isn’t nearly as essential as some people want to claim, but there are problems forming that will just get worse if the government doesn’t reopen. As of this writing, that doesn’t seem very likely.

But President Donald Trump clearly wants that to happen, and for obvious reasons.

The problem is what he wants Senate Republicans to do about it.

President Donald Trump on Thursday urged congressional Republicans to unilaterally end the government shutdown by eliminating the Senate filibuster — urging them to take an unprecedented step that GOP leaders have firmly opposed until now.

“It is now time for the Republicans to play their ‘TRUMP CARD,’ and go for what is called the Nuclear Option — Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

The directive — which came after Trump returned from several days abroad — is likely to upend efforts on Capitol Hill to bring an end to the weekslong funding impasse. And it immediately ratcheted up the pressure on Republican leaders, who have adamantly opposed eliminating the 60-vote threshold for passing legislation as a way to end the shutdown.

Top GOP lawmakers have long argued for keeping that threshold in place, asserting that the filibuster benefits Republicans — and will serve as a key safeguard against Democrats passing transformative legislation the next time they’re in power.

And those top GOP lawmakers are right.

The Second Amendment, in particular, has benefited greatly from the filibuster. During the Biden administration, particularly during the first couple of years, the Democrat-controlled House passed numerous bits of gun control that then went to a Democrat-controlled Senate.

The only reason none of them became law was because of the filibuster. Mitch McConnell might be guilty of many sins, but he held firm on filibustering gun control legislation that would have been an absolute trainwreck for gun rights in this country.

And I’m not stupid enough to think pro-gun lawmakers will control Congress indefinitely.

Taking out a key mechanism for protecting gun rights, among other things, is incredibly short-sighted.

I understand the president’s frustration, but the reality is that this isn’t the answer. This is a short-term win and a long-term loss. Sure, future Republican-controlled Senates will take advantage of there being no filibuster remaining, but you’re deluded if you don’t think Democrats will have a field day with it.

Laws aren’t things that should just happen. They should be as hard as possible to pass because each one impacts millions of people, both in the short and the long term. There needs to be as much consensus as possible to make them happen, and repealing the filibuster will undermine that and potentially make things very, very ugly down the road.

We know Democrats are coming for our gun rights at the next opportunity.

Please don’t make the mistake of ending the one mechanism available to a pro-gun minority that can be used to stop them.

Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
