Modern sporting rifles, which the media likes to call “assault weapons,” are extremely popular and extremely useful firearms. They’re good for self-defense, a bulwark against tyranny, and yes, they can be used for hunting in a number of cases. They’re versatile weapons that can also be versatile for a number of different shooters in a household.
In short, they’re fantastic firearms. I’m partial to the good old AR-15 myself, but I also like AKs and really want to get a FAL someday.
But in Minnesota, the writing is on the wall. Without some serious changes, the powers that be are definitely coming for those guns. It starts with Saint Paul’s decision to try and attack these firearms, and doesn’t stop there.
St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter (D) said this is the “bare minimum of what we ought to be doing” at the ordinance’s introduction in an October 22 city council meeting.
“The proposal is entirely performative, as Minnesota has statewide preemption for firearm laws and the ordinance would be unenforceable without approval by the state legislature,” reported the NRA Institute for Legislative Action (ILA).
The city will reportedly take up the proposal’s second reading on November 5, but it has yet to be added to the official calendar. A third reading and potential final passage is also reportedly scheduled for November 12.
Even with no mechanism of enforcement and immediate invalidity under state law, the city council proposed this ordinance anyway. This, once again, shows that anti-gun politicians do not hold the law in the same regard as law-abiding gun owners do.
The actions from the Minnesota capital come on the heels of Gov. Tim Walz’s (D) call for a special session of the state legislature to pass a similar host of gun-control measures, including an “assault-weapons” ban.
The truth is that so-called assault weapon bans have been popular ever since the last one sunset, even as we learned that it didn’t actually do anything at all. That’s because anti-gunners are downright terrified of these firearms, all without any real cause.
“But mass shootings!”
Spare me. The mass shooting that sparked the current era of them was Columbine, which took place during the assault weapon ban. It didn’t stop the massacre at all. It just made things annoying as hell for a lot of people who weren’t interested in hurting anyone who wasn’t trying to hurt them.
Minnesota is bound and determined to come after what America’s 1st Freedom called “America’s rifle,” and there’s a cynical part of me that can’t help but think that they want to ban it because it’s America’s rifle. People like them, therefore, have to go.
It’s not like the AR-15 hadn’t been around for decades before 1994, though it became so popular because of the assault weapon ban, somewhat ironically.
This is the big ask for anti-gunners everywhere they don’t already have them, and there’s another part of me that’s paranoid that the end goal is to make resistance to gun confiscation down the road far more difficult.
Either way, sooner or later, the Supreme Court is going to have to formally rule on assault weapon bans and put an end to this nonsense once and for all. The groundwork is laid via both Heller and Bruen, so all they have to do is stick with the precedent to justify it. They just need to get it over with and put this stupidity out of our misery.
