Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sidestepped questions Wednesday about whether Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer should step aside after Senate Democrats backed a deal to end the record-breaking government shutdown, as reported by The New York Post.
The exchange comes amid growing speculation that the New York congresswoman is considering a 2028 primary challenge against Schumer.
Ocasio-Cortez, 36, criticized Senate Democrats for allowing Republicans to push through a bill reopening the government without securing firm healthcare concessions.
“I think what is so important for folks to understand is that this problem is bigger than one person, and it actually is bigger than the minority leader in the Senate,” she told reporters.
“You had eight Senate Democrats who coordinated their own votes on this,” she continued. “A leader is a reflection of the party, and Senate Democrats have selected their leadership to represent them. And so the question needs to be bigger than just one person.”
Q: “Should Schumer stay as minority leader?”

The House member from Queens and the Bronx has long been critical of her party’s leadership, frequently challenging Schumer and other establishment Democrats on policy and strategy.
Her latest comments follow a 42-day government shutdown that ended when several Senate Democrats joined Republicans to approve a stopgap funding measure.
Ocasio-Cortez did not directly answer whether she supports Schumer remaining as Senate leader, but she made clear her dissatisfaction with the outcome.

“We had a responsibility to deliver on health care subsidies, and the Senate failed to do that,” she said. “I certainly disagreed with what just happened.”
When asked about her rumored political ambitions, Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged the speculation but dismissed it as premature. “That’s years from now,” she said when asked about a possible 2028 Senate or presidential run.
Schumer, 74, has faced increasing frustration from his party’s progressive wing after a series of high-stakes negotiations with Republicans.
Earlier this year, polling showed Ocasio-Cortez narrowly leading him in a potential Democratic primary following his decision not to block a GOP-backed spending measure in March.
The latest shutdown agreement reignited that tension, with several House Democrats and a handful of Democratic Senate candidates publicly calling for new leadership. So far, no sitting senators have done so.
A Schumer spokesperson pushed back on the criticism, telling The New York Post, “None of these people are senators or know the details of what happened in the Senate this week. Sen. Schumer has led the fight on the health care crisis, and will continue to do so.”
The Senate passed the funding measure Tuesday, and the House is expected to approve it and send it to President Trump’s desk by Wednesday evening.
The record-breaking 42-day shutdown disrupted multiple federal agencies and left hundreds of thousands of workers without pay.
