Reasonable Person Podcast Reunites 2A Behemoths

Podcasting is playing an important role in today’s information exchange. A new project has brought together some big personalities from the Second Amendment world and it’s worth giving a listen.

In the wake of the Charlie Kirk assassination, former podcaster and host of the Polite Society Podcast Paul Lathorp got energized to get back behind the mic. Lathrop took a several year hiatus and walked away from his incredibly successful show to pursue a new career and work opportunities. Joining Lathrop are two former co-hosts and friends of his, Kat Stevens — a celebrated gun and outdoors writer —  and Brian de Almeida.

To describe the hosts of Reasonable Person Podcast, we can use the word libertarian — maybe loosely. That’d be a lowercase “l” libertarian though. Politically speaking the trio are more conservative leaning, with Stevens and de Alemedia having come from — different — religious conservative upbringings. That said, Stevens even admits she’s “adrift” politically.

“I believe, politically, Paul and I are probably the most closely aligned,” Stevens said. “Brian might be a little more relaxed about it, not by a lot, but by a few degrees [more] than we are. There was a time I would have called myself a Libertarian. Now I don’t. I don’t really identify as anything. The conservative movement isn’t what it used to be. Heck, the Democratic movement isn’t either, and it kind of leaves you adrift.”

Stevens explained that they all have the shared goal of educating people to get back to “good American values and traditions” as well as understanding the Constitution. She said that these are things that get left by the wayside in today’s world.

De Almeida agreed that Stevens and him both came from conservative religious backgrounds. However, he notes that Stevens’ experiences were vastly different from his own. As for Lathrop, de Almeida suspects a lot of his political ideologies come from his experiences as a long haul truck driver.

“We’ve got that Libertarian kind of base, but our experiences have been vastly different,” de Almeida said. “So, that’s important — gives us enough in the way of different perspectives to disagree and to have something to discuss, you know that [it] isn’t just an echo chamber.”

Lathrop opened up about deciding to get back on the airwaves. When Charlie Kirk was assassinated, Lathrop said that it deeply affected him.

“I have crossed paths with Charlie in the past, as have a lot of people in our community,” Lathrop said. “I had a ton of respect for him. I’m so glad he was doing what he was doing. [He] was so darn successful at it, and his arc wasn’t done. He was going to be huge.”

Lathrop said that Kirk was killed because he was making a difference — something he said the extreme far left can’t tolerate.

In making the decision to start podcasting again Lathrop said that he did not want to just limit what he covered to the Second Amendment. He said that he wanted to discuss all freedoms and liberties. Lathrop noted that all of our freedoms are currently under attack as well as how we defend them.

“I think the goal for the podcast is to make noise on the conservative side for what is right,” Stevens said when asked about the direction of the show. “Not just what we feel is right. Not playing on emotion. But, playing on fact — based on the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and tying it into current events, which there are endless, endless examples of today.”

Part of what they’re doing Stevens said is out of frustration. She said there’s a desire to be engaged in the process — not just do nothing.

“I don’t want to just write about guns. Paul doesn’t want to just do his nine-to-five anymore,” she said. “Brian does carpentry. He does great work, … But we all want to do more than that. We all have families and kids of varying ages, and we’re horrified by what we’re seeing our kids left with — don’t even get me started on grandkids.”

De Almeida is a family man with six kids, four of which are teenagers ranging between the ages of 14 and 18. He said there’s often an additional two to four kids sitting around his dinner table because his home is the one where the youth gravitate to.

“We get to talk. We get to talk a lot about kind of what’s being shoved at them in school, in social media and we get, and we get lots of opportunities to discuss that stuff,” de Almeida explained. “And there’s a lot that kind of ends up falling to me … to help provide some historical context for things that are coming up. … and having discussions with them about the issues that are being pushed at them.” 

De Almeida said that he tries to offer and provide a rational viewpoint. A viewpoint that often contradicts what’s getting pushed at them by social media. “I want to continue to provide that for a bigger audience — step back from being reactionary,” he said.

The inaugural episode of Reasonable Person Podcast came out on September 30. The episode dives into the Kirk assassination as well as other topics such as:

• The implications of free speech
• Social media and its role in violence
• The role of dialogue in the community
• As well as talks about their future plans

Since launch, they’ve released five total episodes. Besides doing audio only, some of the episodes are in video as well as live video format. Right now they’re using their Facebook page as their landing page or you can check them out on their Libsyn podcast page.

“We’ll see, you know, we’ll see how far this goes and how long it lasts,” Lathrop said. “I’m not going to say this is going to be another show that has a 12-year run and goes to the point where we’re doing live video every week and a separate compendium every day.” But he’s also not ruling that out.
